Gimmie Trouble album
$9.59 The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of the Four Horsemen's stripped-down, hard-rocking style, but standout cuts such as "Hot Rod" and the poignant "Song for Absent Friends" generally lacked the Southern Skynyrd flavor, and especially the power boogie AC/DC crunch of old. Instead, the album mostly resorted to a mellower, more soulful, decidedly sleeker Black Crowes-type groove for tracks like the title song and "Drunk Again" (note background lady singers). A few songs also forced the "we're still rockin"' storyline ad nauseam (see cheesy opener "Still Alive and Well" and ...

| | Paul Van Dyk Politics Of Dancing, Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Gimmie Trouble music CDs
$12.55 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc one's mix, a 17-song epic journey into uplifting, atmospheric dancefloor dreaminess. Theatrical stops and starts feature into every one of these blissful numbers, but Van Dyk keeps things moving at a pace such that the listener probably won't notice the gimmicky device is being overused. Otherwise, everything is tasteful with vocal numbers that don't get too precious and just enough Benny Benassi-styled electro to let you know this is 2005 and not 2000. Wayne Jackson's earthy vocals make Van Dyk's own "The Other Side" the album's song to remember while opening the more sprawling disc two. The drops followed by buildups are back for the second set, but the tracks are allowed to hypnotize longer and Van Dyk's segues are practically invisible as the DJ disappears behind the seamless set. From the hooky "Believe" by Santiago Nino to Holden & Thompson's cooing closer, "Nothing," it's Van Dyk at his best, perfectly ...

| | Vangelis Chariots Of Fire CD (1982) SDTK
Gimmie Trouble CD music
$6.49 While only serious film buffs are likely to recall Hugh Hudson's role as the director of the Oscar-winning CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the Greek composer Vangelis became, and remained, a household name with his soundtrack for the 1981 film. At the time, the theme song was parodied as being excessively saccharin.
Indeed, with titles such as "Five Rings" and "100 Metres," the album wears its Olympian heart on its sleeve. Nonetheless, CHARIOTS OF FIRE is often a brooding work, and if the prevailing memory of this album is one of slow-motion runners and heady triumph, Vangelis's synthesizer work often conveys a sense of isolation and lost glory.
Vangelis is one of the most famed composers of film music, and with 1492 he adds another superior soundtrack to a discography that includes such classics as CHARIOTS OF FIRE and BLADE RUNNER. The soundtrack to a film that recounts Christopher Columbus's journey and discovery of America, 1492 has all the grandeur and scope one would associate with the film's topic. As per usual, Vangelis employs various electric and acoustic elements, including synthesizer, ...

| | Ming & Ping MP2 CD (2005)
Gimmie Trouble album
$12.15 In the year since the release of Ming & Ping's 2004 debut LP MingPing.com, these Hong Kong-born, San Francisco-dwelling identical twins have become a small scale pop-cultural phenomenon, attracting a diverse and devoted cult following with their sublimely subdued, New Wave-inflected pop songs, smart visual style, and soft-spoken charisma. Though still flying under mass media's radar, Ming & Ping's videos, music, and image have spread rapidly across the globe via the Internet, surfacing in dance clubs, film festivals, and magazines from Japan to Great Britain. Now, with the completion of Ming & Ping's second LP, MP2 (Omega Point Records), it's clear that these brothers and their irresistible brand of electro/indie pop are just too much fun to remain buried in the underground much longer. The opening track, "A Little Different", eases listeners into the album - the gentle synthesizers and the brothers' round-and-round vocals weaving a pleasantly hypnotic web. From there the energy level rises quickly, cresting with the kinetic New Wave rave-up "Delete" and the propulsive synthpop cut "Midnight on the Bridge", with its haunting chorus of "we both wonder what it's like to drive our car / past the yellow line into the dark / looking up from the water, I'd see you smiling". Another standout, "Splendid", will have many listeners whistling its melody for weeks.Live, where they were once content to perform with their tape recorder and CASIO at coffee house open mics, the twins have since responded to fans' demands for a show more in keeping with their albums by assembling an act featuring Chinese emperors and giant wind-up cymbal monkeys, dazzling video projections, backing dancers, and a multi-talented supporting crew known as "The Ming & Ping Dynasty". The brothers have taken their synthpop-cum-Cantonese Opera spectacle all the way from their native San Francisco all ...

$6.69 This is my second album and the first with vocals! I'am excited about the direction of the music and am experimenting with all genres and styles seeking to come up with a new sound. | | Just Jack Overtones CD (2006)
Gimmie Trouble CD music
$13.09 North Londoner Just Jack (a.k.a. Jack Allsop) draws on hip-hop, house, and the singer-songwriter tradition to create an appealing, hard-to-define hybrid. Sometimes Just Jack sounds like Beck, sometimes he sounds like the Streets, but OVERTONES stakes out its own territory, thanks to the artist's listen-to-this storytelling and wildy inventive sonic imagination (his pastiches incorporate symphonic pop alongside club-ready beats). The singles "Starz In Their Eyes" and "Glory Days" are standouts, but there's ...
