Asterix album
$14.39 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. On numerous tracks, several of the Irish sirens sing together; a particular standout is a soothingly sweet version of Enya's breakthrough hit "Orinoco Flow."

| | Bing Crosby Christmas Classics CD (2006)
Asterix CD music
$11.35 In 1942, legendary crooner Bing Crosby recorded one of the most enduring songs, Christmas or otherwise, with "White Christmas," a #1 hit that would return to the charts every holiday season for decades to follow. This budget compilation starts from that logical point and collects other classics from the dulcet-toned singer including "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Frosty the Snowman," and lesser-known gems such as "The Littlest Angel."
Additional personnel: David Bowie (vocals).

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential as air. (Note: The Deluxe Edition includes two bonus tracks and an additional disc of remixes.)

| | Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas CD (2000)
Asterix songs
$6.09 The perfect holiday album if you plan on opening your presents under a palm tree. Masterfully performing these slide guitar interpretations are some of the genre's best-known artists such as Keola Beamer, Moses Kahumoku, and Led Kaapana. These sunny versions of Christmas classics like "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Winter Wonderland" don't necessarily evoke images of sleigh rides and bundled carolers, but they work well as an alternative to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A fun disc for those who would rather spend the season on the beach. ~ Zac Johnson
Arranger: Ozzie Kotani.
Personnel: Cyril Pahinui, George Kahumoku (12-string guitar); Keola Beamer (steel guitar, nylon-string guitar); Moses Kahumkou (nylon-string guitar).

| | Shahram Nazeri Passion Of Rumi CD (2007)
Asterix album
$15.75 It's perhaps ironic that you don't need to be able to understand the words to appreciate this celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of the great Iranian poet Rumi. But these performances by father and son, along with the other four members of the ensemble, transcend language to reach pure emotion. It can be as affecting as singer Shahram Nazeri's vocals on "Fanayam Man 1," where a spare backing merely emphasizes the voice, or the remarkable instrumental "Journey to Eternity" featuring Hafez Nazeri's work on the stringed setar (Persian lute), a virtuoso piece of playing. He deserves praise, too, for his compositions here and arrangements, which carry further the idea of monophonic Iranian melodies and dress them in harmony, making for a full, glorious coat which is instantly accessible to Western ears. Using young musicians who are both deeply familiar with the tradition and willing to experiment, he creates something lush and beautiful, the perfect foil for his father's voice, which is a majestic, emotional instrument, and a true listening experience. This is far more than a celebration of a man and his works, it's an achievement of outstanding merit. ~ Chris Nickson
"Passion of Rumi" is a celebration of the poetry of Rumi with a new and fresh musical approach. This recording is the first work of Shahram Nazeri in collaboration with his son, Hafez Nazeri, the composer of this work. Shahram Nazeri, the most well-known

That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.

| | Felm No Nono! CD (2002)
Asterix music CDs
$14.69 Composed between 1992 and 1996, these 19 pieces were finally mastered in 1996. Spontaneous, sensitive, these short pieces carry a lot of emotions, despite their obvious electronic feel. This album was used by the European Space Agency to add music to some of their most stunning images of satellites, earth observation missions, etc...No words on this CD, just pure instrumental music coming directly from the composer's soul to you through his home studio located in the heart of the beautiful Vexin region west of Paris. Vintage synth sounds, old fashioned drum machine adds to the nostalgy that these tunes will bring to you.Sit back, and let your mind wander.
| | Little Sue Shine CD (2004)
Asterix songs
$18.99 We recorded this cd, Ezra Holbrook, Lewi Longmire,Tom Nunes and myself, as a band, meaning we all had a say in the production; we butted heads a few times but mostly it was copacetic. Secretly I was in charge the whole time! Don’t tell them! Tom worked as an engineer and producer in a studio in Salem, Oregon so we were able to record there with no one but us in the building. This afforded us a level of concentration that I had heretofore not experienced in the studio, and we relished it! This, and the fact that we were an extremely tight band, is what made it possible for us to record “Shine” basically live. I did re-sing the title track, but only because it was the title track and I sort of had to. The rest we did all together, at the same time! Even most of Lewi’s guitar solos remained intact from the original take, a testament to the greatness of Lewi. We only slathered on the backing vocals, keys and various and sundry items afterwards. Very proud of this.A review from online magazine, "In Music We Trust" Singer-songwriter Little Sue never fails to amaze. On her latest, Shine, she truly does, offering up a drinking man's cocktail of country-rock and folk-pop.From the sorrow of opener "Drunk", Sue Weaver quickly gives you tunes to cry in your beer to. But it doesn't stop there."In Spite of Everything" is another slice of lyrically smart, vocally dead-on, heart-on-the-sleeve emotions that rip right into the listener as they pour out of Weaver. Whereas, the title track's laid back, folk approach is gentle and uplifting, one of the album's shining points with a better outlook on life. Meanwhile, the folk-rock of "A Happy Picture", despite its title, paints the picture of broken-hearts and searching for love that listeners will latch on to and quickly call their own."Sweet and Tender: The Mexico Song" is both sweet and tender, a delicate balance between intimate folk and cozy country, Weaver sounding positive and upbeat, the backing vocals helping to warm your soul.Little Sue may not be a nationally recognized name -- but she should be. Shine is yet another feather to put in her cap, a well-written, well-executed record that is honest and pure, melodically rich, and as warm and inviting as they come. I'll give it an A.Alex Steininger- In Music We Trust
| | Kevin Drew Spirit If... CD (2007) (Import) Canada
Asterix album
$12.05 The first in a series of proposed BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS releases, 2007's SPIRIT IF is the debut solo album by BSS keys player Kevin Drew. Not surprisingly, though, many other members of the Canadian indie-rock collective pop by for a visit, including in-demand singer Feist and the Do Make Say Think duo of Ohad Benchetrit and Charles Spearin, making the record sound an awful lot like a full-on Broken Social Scene outing. Highlights of the eclectic set include the New Wave-tinged "Frightening Lives" and the quirky electro-pop tune "Big Love." Most notably, however, SPIRIT directly connects Drew with his alt-rock precursors when Dinosaur Jr. guitarist/vocalist J. Mascis joins in on the glorious six-string workout "Backed Out on The...," which easily stands out as the dynamic album's most majestic moment.

| | Lincoln Brewster Today Is The Day CD (2008)
Asterix songs
$10.05 TODAY IS THE DAY, the third studio release from guitarist and singer-songwriter Lincoln Brewster, continues to refine the artist's take on contemporary Christian rock. Unlike some CCM artists who sublimate their message so as not to alienate secular artists, Brewster's praise and worship agenda is front and center, as songs like "Give Him Praise," "God You Reign," and "The Arms of My Savior" attest. The songs incorporate pop and gospel influences as well as sleek mainstream rock, yet are distinguished by Brewster's fine tunesmithery and blazing guitar work.
