Ogawa Kaya:'Guernica' by Dan Grunebaum This is authentic music. And that's perhaps surprising considering we're talking about a young Japanese guitarist working in the blues traditions of the American South. But it turns out Kaya has paid his dues, busking on the streets and playing in the clubs of New Orleans, London, Amsterdam and Okinawa. From the sounds of it, the dedication has paid off: Kaya has fashioned a distinctly expressive, individualistic style of acoustic and electric blues that speaks from the heart, while at the same time reflecting the legacy of the Delta blues and later stylists like Ry Cooder. Whether it's the sly, greasy blues of "Guernica" or the pensive quiet of "Okinawan Butterfly," Kaya creates an atmosphere of intimacy that leaves a lasting impression. A strong debut indeed. Blue music CDs
$13.85 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things settle down and get more rootsy on the following two slow ...

| | Johnny Winter Still Alive And Well CD (1973)
Blue album
$6.79 You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally fit on the songs themselves. Produced by his longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who also leads the tight and flashy band with his rhythm and second lead playing, the album is possibly the most pop-oriented release of Winter's tenure at Columbia. The band, which features Todd Rundgren on synthesizers and Mellotron ...

$14.79 THE DIVINE BROWN "The Dirty Gospel According To The Divine Brown"Album to be released Election Day, 2004 thru WRECKED 'EM WRECKORDS(WRECKED 009)The Divine Brown are a snarling Rock n Roll tag team, a sleek smart crew who plan an adrenalised rush of powerful guitar noise with no apologies. They hit the stage and it sounds awesome. Stomping anthems, big fat hooks, a bike chain wielding mob swagger and confidence that can take any room. They hook up the timeless cool of a sharp fifties street gang and turn it up loud, mixing it with insurrectionary soul power and enormous rip snorting guitar irresistibility. They capture the raw rush of primetime punk rock and effortlessly hotwire it up to the complete history of Rock n Roll, fanning those furious flames one more time in pursuit of that perfect Rock n Roll moment, that ultimate sonic high.Based in London, UK, since 2001, they have kicked up a riot with shows alongside the likes of The Hives, The Datsuns, and the Immortal Lee County Killers. Now they mean serious business and are ready for the international breakout. Looking like a bunch of ex-cons, spitting glass and holding the Rock n Roll grenade. A fully formed and finely tuned Rock n Roll street machine with its guitars and guns blazing. Come and hang with the gang with a fistful of napalm. Come, be healed by the Power, the Glory, The Divine Brown.Press Quotes:Muscular, punching rock n roll. Fearsomely fierce delivery...Unsubtle, unpolished, irresistible ramalama...Party music too charismatic too deny. Not clever but pretty fuckin' big. Kerrang MagazineThe Divine Brown wipe the floor with every other garage punk band around...If they came from Detroit and not London, The NME would be queuing up to have their brains sucked out. Whats On In LondonWhen The Dictators wrote "Who Will Save Rock n Roll" they'd have been less worried if there were more bands like The Divine Brown. Rock Sound MagazineThe Divine Brown know how to write a 3 minute punk anthem. A cool and vibrant band.
