Hamlet album
$11.09 CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds.
Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. The opening track features the extraordinary, bell-like vocal timbre of 15-year-old Chloe Agnew over an orchestral backing that includes tin whistle. "Isle of Inisfree" showcases Orla Fallon, whose dark voice and supple harp playing make for a haunting listening experience. On numerous tracks, several of the Irish sirens sing together; a particular standout is a soothingly sweet version of Enya's breakthrough hit "Orinoco Flow."

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential as air. (Note: The Deluxe Edition includes two bonus tracks and an additional disc of remixes.)

| | Bing Crosby Christmas Classics CD (2006)
Hamlet music CDs
$11.35 In 1942, legendary crooner Bing Crosby recorded one of the most enduring songs, Christmas or otherwise, with "White Christmas," a #1 hit that would return to the charts every holiday season for decades to follow. This budget compilation starts from that logical point and collects other classics from the dulcet-toned singer including "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Frosty the Snowman," and lesser-known gems such as "The Littlest Angel."
Additional personnel: David Bowie (vocals).
| | Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas CD (2000)
Hamlet songs
$6.09 The perfect holiday album if you plan on opening your presents under a palm tree. Masterfully performing these slide guitar interpretations are some of the genre's best-known artists such as Keola Beamer, Moses Kahumoku, and Led Kaapana. These sunny versions of Christmas classics like "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Winter Wonderland" don't necessarily evoke images of sleigh rides and bundled carolers, but they work well as an alternative to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A fun disc for those who would rather spend the season on the beach. ~ Zac Johnson
Arranger: Ozzie Kotani.
Personnel: Cyril Pahinui, George Kahumoku (12-string guitar); Keola Beamer (steel guitar, nylon-string guitar); Moses Kahumkou (nylon-string guitar).
Director: Ruth Komatsu.
| | Andy Montanez Salsa Con Reggaeton CD (2006)
Hamlet album
$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

| | Art Mengo La Mer N'Existe Pas CD (1995)
Hamlet songs
$18.59 David VINCENT's music appears to be really interesting, based on feverish, nervous and anguishing themes. The Swiss artist, known in the civil life under the name Enrique CARRANZA, issued "No Entiendo" in 1999 on the Gazul label. This album contains a lot of electric polyrhythmics, sometimes repetitive, that can be compared to KING CRIMSON (Circa "Red") or GENTLE GIANT without vocals. A more experimental side and some noisy passages are also evoking SHUB NIGGURATH. Far from developing the usual solitary musician trauma, this masterpiece shows a real cohesive band spirit, and can be listened in a whole with much enjoyment. Not to be missed !

| | Rick Cordes Around Again CD (2007)
Hamlet CD music
$8.69 "Around Again" -- Don't wait around too long to pick up this gem! It is around here right now, and ready for your listening ears. It has been said that music is the purest art form, sound translated into pure feeling. Rick Cordes' latest full length release, Around Again, will bring you back in touch with your most hidden emotions. In the title track, "Around Again," Rick grieves the loss of a close friend, but the music as well as the lyric of this ballad is beautiful and gives comfort by reminding us of eternal life cycles. Likewise, "Billy Come Home" is an emotive tune with a haunting and powerful hook. Few will be able to listen to this song without tears. The songwriting throughout this CD is first rate, the playing is truly professional, and the melodies and hooks are vividly memorable. Rick has a warmness and prosody to his music that is both intriguing and comforting. Every guitar solo is worth its weight in gold, and the rhythm section plays only for the song--this is a highly recommended recording.Mike Spinrad, MusicianIndividual songs can also be downloaded at iTunes .
| | Now That's What I Call Arajay CD (2007)
Hamlet music CDs
$6.69 " ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ "Now That's What I Call Arajay is spoof--a satirical take on musical and cultural cliches that is, by and large, well-crafted in its own right. Lil' Jon's "skeet skeet skeet" comes to mind when "Spraying Semen On Stuff," the album's fun-spirited, porno dance track, kicks in. Now That's... is diverse and effectively arranged, offering a postmodern critique of sorts on genres ranging from mainstream rap to pop to electronic, with Arajay, who dubs himself "David Alan Greir-ical" at the top of the album, working in references to Andy Capp, Eazy E. and the Audubon Zoo within one verse on "Born to be Mild." Comparisons to Weird Al are inevitable, but Arajay's electropop is tightly programmed with enough effects and bells and whistles to be interesting without becoming distracting. His raps are old-school in that they tell extended stories, albeit with the narrative steeped more in geekdom--actual and tongue-in-cheek--than hardcore. The mix becomes a bit repetitive in spots, such as on "Orange" (I like the post-Katrina version better, yo), relying too heavily on vocals, which could be fuller on the less overtly witty tracks. Still, this is some fun, legit shit, an anomaly on the too-often humorless New Orleans music scene. Lisa Haviland, Antigravity Magazine

| | Fly Kingdom Sweet Blue Thornless Rose CD (2009)
Hamlet album
$13.15 The Fly Kingdom is a South Florida based music group that was conceived in 2005 by Jerry Oviedo, as an outlet for his musical thoughts and self expression. Early in its inception, the musical act was associated with bands such as Marilyn Manson, NIN and even Boyd Rice. However after recording three CD's, Jerry took a different direction towards instrumental music and the Sitar. At that point Jerry was on the verge of doing away with the whole Fly Kingdom project in order to focus on his music as a form of meditation. But that idea would soon die when a close friend of his of well over a decade by the name of Rose Monaco, whose thoughts and suggestions had inspired songs like "Blue Roses" and "Hope (My Thornless Rose)" would give him yet another direction to go in. At that point Jerry started charting the course for his new musical direction, with some advice from a co-worker named Carlos Avila. With all these new inspirations and ideas, Jerry took a melody that he had and wrote the song "Sweet Blue Thornless Rose". It was at this point, that all his thoughts came together and an "electrified" style of music soon developed, after he had hooked up his sitar to a Cry Baby Wah Pedal, which would in turn, become his main instrument. Following the likes of Ravi Shankar, Santana, and Slash, this project would prove to become an experimental and unique form of music. Jerry cites his style of music as "if Santana went to India". Recently, Jerry has begun to add vocals to this new style of music, as a way of refusing to settle into the established norm that is sitar based Indian music, by challenging the perceptions that people have and braving these uncharted sound escapes. He is a musical pioneer, and this is his gift, his music, and his legend...
