The Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernandez was already a cultural icon by the late 1960s. By the early 2000s, a time that saw ranchera reaching untold levels of popularity in both Mexico and the United States, Fernandez had become a towering legend. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the man's moving, romantic vocals showed no signs of losing their power, as 2007's PARA SIEMPRE VICENTE FERNANDEZ proved. A collaboration with acclaimed Norteno songwriter Joan Sebastian, PARA SIEMPRE is a winning collection, showcasing both Fernandez's inimitable style and Sebastian's fine songs. Four decades and dozens of albums into his career, Vicente Fernández remains one of Mexico's finest ranchera artists, arguably the best ever. It's as if he gets better with age, for Para Siempre is a near-perfect album. The singing, the songwriting, the instrumentation -- it's all stellar. The songwriting is particularly notable. All of the songs on Para Siempre were written by Joan Sebastían, who, like Fernández, is a legend of Mexican music. Standout performances here include "La Derrota," "A Quién Vas a Amar Más Que a Mi," "Para Siempre," and "Estos Celos," though because there are so many great songs here, it's difficult to single out particular highlights. Para Siempre
$15.15 This collection of tracks by pop singer, Billy Vaughn, features such trademark songs as "La Paloma", "Lili Marleen", and "Blue Hawaii". Studio orchestra leader Billy Vaughn may have been even more popular in Germany in the 1950s and '60s than he was in the U.S., which helps explain why the most comprehensive compilation of his work originates there. This two-CD, 50-track album of original Dot Records recordings contains 20 of Vaughn's 28 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries, including the major U.S. hits "Melody of Love," "The Shifting Whispering Sands," "Sail Along Silvery Moon" and "Raunchy." Then there are songs that topped the German charts, like "Wheels" and "La Paloma." The set has a definite German tilt, with such titles as "Zwei Gitarren Am Meer and "Unter Dem Doppeladler" on the song list (both of which made the German Top 20), but it also gives a broad sense of Vaughn's arranging and ...

| | Dream Theater When Dream & Day Unite CD (1989) Germany; Originally Released in 1989
Para Siempre
$13.95 Originally released on Mechanic (42259). All tracks have been digitally remastered. WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time." Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time changes gave the group a complexity that hadn't been experienced for an entire decade in the rock genre. "YTSE Jam" was essentially their answer to Rush's "YYZ" and became a staple in the band's live set. The session was marred mostly by subpar singing, too many metal clichés, and poor production. There is, however, enough interesting playing to make it a worthwhile listen for fans of this genre, and is certainly essential for Dream Theater fans. ~ Robert Taylor
The official label debut album of the progressive metal band incorporated musical ideas from their predecessors like Yes, Genesis, Queensryche, Rush and the like and forged their own distinctive imprint. Players John Petrucci ...

| | Rene' West This Town CD (2007)
Para Siempre
$18.99 René West’s second CD, This Town, collects 12 new character-driven songs about working class people – it’s filled with often flawed but likeable factory workers, used car salesmen, gold diggers, hotel workers, and murderers. The songs explore social issues, and the narratives are delivered in a strong, full voice that Matthew Smith of Fort Worth Weekly described as “part Janis Joplin, part Lucinda Williams, part West’s own style.”This Town’s dozen original songs include many of her most requested songs. The opening track, “Counting Pennies,” sets the stage with a person searching sofa cracks for change to buy gas. “Close Out Sale” is a metaphor for divorce and a criticism of consumer culture. “Moon and the Stars” reflects on the value of love in a materialistic world, while “Pretty” explores the lure of the city and media’s influence on a young girl’s desires. The title track is about three generations of factory workers, and “Lonely Highway” is the story of a disgruntled front desk clerk. West delivers one punch line after another in “Please Steal My Car,” (a co-write with John Walker), a witty take on hard times. “Cigarettes and Beer” seems to be about a victim, until the ending twist.Once the gothic theme of This Town began to emerge, West edited, reworked, and wrote new songs. This Town was recorded by Mark Penland in West’s 1920s bungalow during the past year. West said she was “looking for the intimate sound that comes from a room filled with hard woods and old books.”West plays acoustic guitar and sings on all of the tracks. She also adds a bit of percussion and harmony on “Pretty.”Austin-based songwriter Eric Hisaw adds lead electric guitar.West describes meeting Hisaw as “a real stroke of luck. From the first notes out of his guitar, I knew he was the perfect guitarist for the songs.”Other core musicians are Earl Johnson on bass; Rodger Harrison on dobro, lap steel, bass, percussion, and harmonies; and William Bryan Massey III and Andy Mayer on drums. Some of the best musicians in the Dallas-Fort Worth area add cameos, including Jenni Mansfield Peal on accordion and harmonies; Bob “Zen Bubba” Williford on lap steel, electric guitar, and harmonies; Marj Troyer on mandolin; David Mills on keyboards; Daniel “D” Hardaway on ...
