If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.

The Glenn Medeiros Christmas Album is one of the worst examples of how to perform these classic Christmas carols. First, let it be known that Medeiros has an excellent voice, perfectly suited for singing the brand of adult contemporary found here. But it is simply too much on this record, which is overloaded with drum machines and fuzzy keyboards and other sleep-inducing production tactics. The album attempts to be mellow and soulful but instead strips the emotion from these songs and leaves behind the empty shell. Some of the tracks still manage to get by on Medeiros' voice, like the jazzy opener, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Still, an overwhelming feeling of blandness haunts this record, making it very hard to recommend. While adult contemporary listeners may find this album to be just fine, other listeners should be warned that this is a very passionless record. ~ Bradley Torreano
