Amorphis: Tom Joutsen (vocals); Tom Roivusaari, Esa Holopainen (guitar); Santeri Kallio (keyboards); Niclas Etelavuori (bass instrument); Ian Rechberger (drums). Additional personnel: Tanya Kemppainen, El Goodman, Kai Kaarnainen, Jofa 'Singin Manager', Marco Hietala (vocals). By the time Finnish band Amorphis--former kings of speed metal-- recorded this eighth album in 2007, their sound had evolved into melodic, bass-heavy metal that draws inspiration from grunge, pop, and symphonic rock. The songwriting on SILENT WATERS is top-notch and shows a marked improvement from even their 2006 entry, ECLIPSE. The highlight here is the title track, an exhilarating power ballad with a haunting piano intro and convincing vocal by lead singer Tomi Joutsen (replacement for long-standing vocalist Pasi Koskinen, who left the band prior to this album). Who says you can't ever find your way home again? Finland's Amorphis started testing the veracity of that age-old maxim in 2005, when their Eclipse album interrupted years of ruthless genre-hopping evolution, took stock of a bevy of styles from all eras of the group's long career, and stewed them into a single, mostly satisfying mélange. Amorphis' peacemaking experiment with their past also coincided with the introduction of new vocalist Tomi Joutsen, leading some to speculate that the departed Pasi Koskinen had much to do with their prior direction, and perhaps proving the point when their subsequent outing, 2007's Silent Waters, found the band pursuing the all-inclusive philosophy once again. And so, on the one hand, listeners can get their death metal fix from guitarist (and original vocalist) Tomi Koivusaari's Cookie Monster contributions to "The White Swan" and the stunning opening tandem of "Weaving the Incantation" and "A Servant" (featuring a notably ripping guitar solo), or experience retrofitted quasi-replicas of the folk-meets-death Tales from the Thousand Lakes era in the almost spookily authentic "Shaman" and the purely acoustic "Enigma." On the other hand, they can experience several examples ("I of Crimson Blood," "Her Alone," "Black River," and the title track) of Amorphis' more recent forays into softer and progressive realms, where Joutsen's gentle croon often shares the spotlight with pianist Santen Kallio's majestic themes. And, finally, just to keep things interesting, the wild card "Towards and Against" blends echoing electronics with semi-industrial guitar textures, a disco-metal beat (probably copped from chart-topping countrymen Nightwish), and guttural and clean vocals for a truly head-spinning hybrid. In the end, it's obvious that Silent Waters lacks same the creative cohesion displayed by most of the group's previous albums, but it's also true that its "one size fits all" strategy manages to represent more of the many "morphs" in Amorphis' long existence than anyone might have thought possible. ~ Eduardo RivadaviaKerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "Newcomer Tomi Joutsen lends himself to the clean singing...adding a hollow croon that echoes Pete Steele and tackling the death growls like a bear trapped in a well. Lovely stuff." Amorphis Silent Waters Songs | 1. | Weaving the Incantation |

| Silent Waters Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) You cannot go wrong with these guys! If you like Amorphis, you will like this album. Simple as that. With new vocalist Tomi Joutsen Amorphis seems to be able to create more of an atmosphere in their music. His death growls are some of the best I have ever heard. This album starts out with a very Opeth inspired track (Their heavier stuff anyways) and continues with another awesome, melodic song. I won't give too much away, but this album has great diversity to it. If you have not heard this band yet, start with Eclipse or Elegy. But all their albums have something to offer. Amazing, simply amazing Amorphis has produced another beautiful album. gotta love the guitars and keyboard, and Tomi's vocals are just great. i highly recommend this and Eclipse. buy it now Submitted by Jesus (Hell) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Finland's Finest Finnish legends Amorphis deliver once again with a stunning collection of their trademark gloomy tales of epic adventure. The songs on Silent Waters encompass everything from roaring melodic death metal (Weaving The Incantation)to acoustic based folky/celtic numbers (Enigma), and seemingly everything in between. New vocalist Tommy Joutsen (also on Eclipse)further demonstrates the incredible diversity of his range with his easy transitions from roaring growls to the smoothest of melodic clean part, while showing he is a more than worthy successor to Pasi Koskinen. With this release, the guys have not only reached a new level of excellence in their career, but also made one of the best metal albums of 2007, or in my opinion of all time. It's that good.

Amazing I can't say enough about what Amorphis has done with their last two albums. The band that has reinvented itself numerous times since its early days has put together its finest lineup to date, and released its finest pair of albums. Silent Waters picks up where Eclipse left off. Beautiful melodies, Kalevala-insipred lyrics and the perfect combination of heaviness and mellowness make this album great. I love this band. Intricacy, musicality, craftsmanship, and nuance are words that, back in 1989, were hardly ever used to describe death metal -- a style so extreme, so ferocious, so intent on annoying parents at any cost that it seemed destined to self-destruct. But Dark Tranquillity and their expansive colleagues in Gothenburg, Sweden, refused to believe that death metal could not be musical, nuanced, and melodic, and that outlook continues to define them on Fiction. This rewarding CD was recorded in 2006 and released in 2007, the year that marked Dark Tranquillity's 18th anniversary. Perhaps 18 years isn't all that long compared to the Rolling Stones celebrating ...

Arranger: Amorphis. In melodic death metal and symphonic black metal, the contrast between extreme and non-extreme elements is a lot like the contrast between what jazz musicians call "inside" and "outside" playing. Some avant-garde jazz favors an inside/outside approach; some avant-garde jazz favors outside playing from start to finish -- and similarly, whether a melodic death metal or symphonic black metal album makes greater use of extreme elements or greater use of non-extreme elements depends on the ...
| | Nickelodeon Kids' Choice CD (2005)
Silent Waters
$12.35 Audio Mixers: Eric Valentine ; Mike Shipley. Arrangers: Sam Watters; Louis Biancaniello. Though Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards have been around since 1987, it was only in 2005 that the network decided to release a companion CD of music popular with the tweens and young adults that watch the channel's programming. Most of Nickelodeon Kids Choice consists of mall-punk and teen pop, but the album features some of the best artists and singles in those styles, including Good Charlotte's "Predictable" and Skye Sweetnam's "Tangled up in Me," respectively. Several of the songs, like Britney Spears' "Everytime," Jessica Simpson's cover of "Take My Breath Away," Clay Aiken's "Invisible," and Kelly Clarkson's "Miss Independent" have been so omnipresent for so long that putting them on another pop collection hardly seems necessary (Clarkson's 2005 smash "Since You've Been Gone," for example, would've been a much better choice). Still, with tracks like Switchfoot's "Dare You to Move" and Alicia Keys' "Diary," the album does a decent job of showing where kids' minds and ...
