Suicide Silence: Mitch Lucker (vocals); Chris Garza, Mike Bodkins (guitars); Mark Heylmun (bass guitar); Alex Lopez (drums). California's Suicide Silence has digested the history of extreme metal from black, to death, to doom, to thrash, to hardcore, and everywhere in between, and synthesized it into a potent mixture. Thundering tracks like "Hands of a Killer" reel like a man on fire, staggering in slow motion to every line of the scorched vocals. "No Pity For a Coward" builds methodically, with an insistent beat and snarling, snapping guitars, and "Bludgeoned to Death" does something close to that to the listener. It's an aggressive and exhausting album that refuses to let up under any circumstances. Despite its reputation for skullcrushing brutality, extreme metal can be melodic and musical in some cases. Melodic death metal and symphonic black metal are two examples of extreme metal striving for musicality, songcraft, and nuance. But there is nothing even remotely melodic or nuanced about Suicide Silence's first full-length album, The Cleansing, which strives for vicious, head-kicking sensory assault and does so without an iota of mercy. This extreme metal CD offers a toxic mixture of math metal, death metal (including grindcore), black metal, and metalcore. Suicide Silence thrives on the angularity of math metal; tempo changes are frequent, and lead singer Mitch Lucker constantly fluctuates between death metal's deep, guttural "cookie monster" growl and black metal's sinister, demonic-sounding rasp. Lucker makes it sound like a vocal duet, but in fact, he is the only lead singer on this 2007 release. Put all of those things together, and you have a caustic brew that is as chaotic as it is vicious. Whether this Southern California band is playing at breakneck speed or going for a breakdown, The Cleansing is downright exhausting -- which, of course, is exactly what Suicide Silence is going for. A perfect example of sensory assault for the sake of sensory assault, The Cleansing is certainly not for everyone; music this abrasive is definitely an acquired taste. But moshers who do appreciate the noisy-for-the-sake-of-noisy approach will find it to be a competent example of metal carried to a ridiculously harsh extreme. ~ Alex HendersonKerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "With plenty of thuggish breakdowns and technical riffing that never compromises on sheer blunt force trauma..." | | Whitechapel This Is Exile CD (2008)
Cleansing
$11.25 Whitechapel: Phil Bozman (vocals); Ben Savage, Zach Householder, Alex Wade (guitar); Gabe Crisp (bass guitar); Kevin Lane (drums). Death metal mavens Whitechapel moved to the Metal Blade label for 2008's THIS IS EXILE, their fourth full-length assault. Propelled by the band's three-guitar attack, THIS IS EXILE slays listeners with grinding riffs, crushing rhythms, and monstrous, growling vocals. Whitechapel throw in progressive elements, too, including time signature changes and startlingly melodic leads, but overall the album lives up to the band's musically punishing and ferociously evil aesthetic. Fans of grindcore and death metal will have plenty to feast on with this one. The burgeoning southwestern United States "deathcore" scene gets another kick in the teeth from Knoxville, TN's Whitechapel with This Is Exile, their first full-length for Metal Blade. A quick glance at the ...
| | Drive Like Jehu CD (1991)
Cleansing
$12.59 Pitchfork was a fine enough band, but whatever happened between those days and the launch of Drive Like Jehu made the newer group a quantum leap forward, as this gripping album demonstrates. Starting with the deceptively calm then ripping "Caress," Drive Like Jehu lives up to the Biblical reference of the group's name by feeling like a heaven-sent storm taking everything along with it at 200 mph. The Rick Froberg/John Reis guitar team sound like they've been dipped in battery acid, wired to a power station, and let absolutely loose, screaming, nervous riffs piled on top of each other and taking off for Mars. Froberg's own wild scream singing suits it perfectly, sounding like something's about to give and leave nothing in its wake. The concluding chorus to "Spikes to You" is a call-and-response from hell, his strangled wail sounding like a last desperate cry for help, while "Good Luck In Jail" sounds even more like something from beyond a violent, horrifying wall of sound. Reis helps out himself every so often, with equally fierce results -- "Step on Chameleon" practically burns with threat both vocally and musically, Froberg's additional ...
