Potemayo Soundtrack album
$10.39 Like the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, GLEE became more than a TV show when several of its songs cracked the Hot 100, including the number four hit "Don't Stop Believing." That song kicks off this soundtrack, the first in a series of albums cataloging the music performed by the show's cast. Not all GLEE members are created equal--some cast mates are far better actors than singers--but this soundtrack has enough star power to keep things trucking along, especially when powerhouse alto Lea Michele takes the wheel. She sounds fantastic throughout, whether she's holding her own during a duet with Broadway queen Kristen Chenoweth or covering the likes of Jordin Sparks, Avril Lavigne, and Queen. The soundtrack ...

$9.35 The motorcyclists' answer to The Fast and the Furious, Biker Boyz features an appropriately testosterone- and adrenaline-driven soundtrack that focuses on hip-hop and nu-metal. Not surprisingly, most of the rap and hip-hop selections are hipper than the rock songs -- while the remix of P.O.D.'s "Boom" ...

Potemayo Soundtrack CD music
$10.49 Three of the first four tracks on this double album, "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "You're The One That I Want" all went on to become big hits in the USA and UK for the new disco sensation John Travolta and his co-star Olivia Newton-John. Frank Valli also took the title song into the upper reaches of charts all over the world. As for this album, it lingered for 12 weeks at number 1 in America, and topped the British chart for a lucky 13. Even in the 90's several of these tracks are still guaranteed floor-fillers at many a party night, and once again it is showing at a theatre near you.

Potemayo Soundtrack music CDs
$8.19 Brenda Russell's commercial breakthrough with the Top Ten hit "Piano in the Dark" in 1988 may have hurt her career as much as it helped, since it set up sales expectations the jazz-pop vocalist was not prepared to meet, and five years later, when Soul Talkin' failed to find a big enough audience, she lost her major-label recording contract. Seven years on, Russell is back on a major label, albeit through Hidden Beach Recordings' manufacturing and distribution deal with Epic Records, a division of Sony Music. But she remains a refined artist unlikely to appeal to a mass audience. She writes mature love songs and sings them in a smoky alto over minor-key jazz arrangements played by expensive session musicians and contemporary jazz guest stars like Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz, and Yellowjackets members Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip. It's music for smooth jazz and adult contemporary radio. But for all its sophistication, it is more about style than substance. When Russell isn't singing about romantic love, she's singing about universal love in such songs as "Ideal World" and "Catch On," which are as fuzzy-headed as they are well-meaning. She is a self-satisfied performer; you can hear her sense of her own significance in practically every note, and in "Expect a Miracle" she alludes to the "ruthless dirty game/Cuttin' corners for the fame" that failed to recognize her worth in the past. Maybe so, but at least on this album, she doesn't present overwhelming evidence to support her sense of injustice. Paris Rain is a pleasant listening experience, not the major new statement of an important artist. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Lee Morgan: Delightfulee CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered
Potemayo Soundtrack songs
$10.15 As Lee Morgan's career moved from hard and post-bop to soul-jazz, Delightfulee serves as a further bridge in a half-and-half fashion. Four of the seven cuts feature his potent quintet with a young and emerging tenor saxophonist, Joe Henderson, as his front line mate, McCoy Tyner ever brilliant on piano, and Billy Higgins firing up the rhythm as only the drummer could. The remainder of the date consists of tracks orchestrated by Oliver Nelson featuring an 11-piece ensemble. There are two selections that feature versions of compositions with both configurations. "Zambia" is a post-bop classic in Morgan's repertoire, sporting a memorable, concise, no-nonsense melody line punctuated by Tyner's piano chords, but in big-band style, it is full and rich, maybe too much so. The easy, deep waltz "Delightful Deggie," may benefit from the orchestration. Wayne Shorter is ...
