Steered by Chris Carusos and Bud Drago, CharacterZ's two-decade tenure is smattered across From Under a Rock, and as a result, this compilation is all over the map stylistically. Starting with the Young Fresh Fellows-feel of "My Girlfriend Is a Reptile," the pair -- utilizing a series of interchangeable co-conspirators -- shifts into catchy, upbeat guitar pop like "Just Another Working Day," and the new wave-inspired vibes of "Nasty Plan/Orson's Song" and "Am I Speaking English." While the post-September 11th somberness of "When They're Bleeding" boasts capable melodies, there are noticeable cracks in CharacterZ' musical sidewalk. The synth-plagued "Ghetto Rock" -- which dates back to 1987 -- hasn't aged well, while the utilization of a car as a metaphor for sex on "Vroom Vroom" is downright laughable, thanks to lyrics about "going to 69 in seconds." When they bow out with "The Answer Is Yes," an Allman Brothers-styled ballad, Carusos and Drago deserve some applause, but From Under a Rock is a hit-or-miss experience. ~ John D. Luerssen

This Meets That finds guitarist John Scofield looking both backward and forward. It's his first recording for the Emarcy label, but for the occasion Scofield resurrected the trio he'd used on several previous albums, most recently 2004's EnRoute: bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart. Never one to rest on his laurels, Scofield has throughout his career applied his virtuosity to several different streams of jazz, ranging from fusion-esque to orchestral to straight bop. This Meets That is something of a mixed bag. The opening track, the Scofield-penned "The Low Road," is a swinging funk jam that's one of several tunes on the record to employ a four-piece horn section. It's a smoker of a track, with Scofield often teasing with distortion but never straying so far away that it might be called unmelodic. In addition to the Scofield originals, three left-field cover songs demonstrate Scofield's ability to apply his technique and imaginative thinking to just about anything he chooses. Perhaps one shouldn't be surprised that a musician always looking to expand his reach would try his hand at squeezing a classic country hit into a jazz framework, but that's what Scofield does on the old Charlie Rich ballad "Behind Closed Doors." The Hot Rods were formed in December of 2005 and have now become one of the southeast’s premier touring rock and roll bands. Known for inventing their own genre of music made from blending rock, psychobilly and punk with a hint of southern rock they have truly defined their own sound. Catchy lyrics combined with musical hooks, The Hot Rods deliver a super high energy stage show with super high energy music. The Hot Rods have performed with Nashville Pussy, Honky, TH' Legendary Shack Shakers and Buckcherry. Over the last couple of months, The Hot Rods were a featured act on Myspace and were selected as a Pabst Blue Ribbon band of the week in 2006 and band of the month in 2007 in Atlanta's Creative Loafing news magazine. The Hot Rods now have a full endorsement from Pabst Blue Ribbon and Jack Daniel's. They are receiving stellar reviews in publications throughout the southeastern U.S. on an almost weekly basis. In the short time The Hot Rods have been together, venues have had record attendance and alcohol sales. The Hot Rods released their debut CD entitled "SUPER SPORT" in October of 2007.
