| | Characterz From Under A Rock CD (2003)
Te Regalo El Mar
$11.39 CharacterZ are Chris Carusos and Bud Drago as well as a galaxy of rotating musicians, depending upon the song. Chris has been raised on the blues and power rock, counting among his heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Robert Johnson. The sound has always been what is uppermost in Chris' mind when writing, recording or producing a track. Listen to the upfront slide guitar on Vroom Vroom or the wah wah used on Apple Pie to understand the importance guitar plays in the music. On the other hand, spend some time with When They're Bleeding to hear a glimpse of Chris' soul.Bud comes from another world (yes - lots of people who know him would second that opinion) and focuses on looking at the way things are through ...

| | Magik Markers Boss CD (2007)
Te Regalo El Mar
$8.29 Magik Markers: Peter D. Nolan (vocals, guitar, piano, drums, electronics, unknown instrument); Elisa R. Ambrogio (vocals, guitar); Lee "Bruise" Ranaldo (guitar, glockenspiel). The noise-rock combo Magik Markers offered their most accessible recording to date with BOSS, released on Ecstatic Peace in 2007. The duo of Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan give more than a few nods to Sonic Youth, but they still cut a distinct swath here that stands enough apart from their benefactors to be of note. For example, "Bad Dreams" finds Ambrogio in startlingly lovely voice, singing over soothing electronics and a gentle finger-picked guitar part. And while Magik Markers still attack with the squalls of improvised skronk ("Pat Garrett," "Circle") that brought them fame in underground circles, tracks such as "Last of the Lemach Line" and "Body Rot" show what happens when their arty exuberance is harnessed into identifiable song structures--the experience becomes one of listening as that energy breaks free from its confines. While listening to Boss, the Magik Markers' second album for Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, it's hard to pinpoint exactly which change is the biggest between this set of songs and albums like Feel the Crayon, I Trust My Guitar, etc., and the Markers' many CD-Rs. Actually, the fact that Boss has pieces of music that could comfortably be called "songs" might be the most radical thing about it. With the help of Lee Ranaldo as ...
| | John Scofield This Meets That CD (2007)
Te Regalo El Mar
$10.69 This Meets That finds guitarist John Scofield looking both backward and forward. It's his first recording for the Emarcy label, but for the occasion Scofield resurrected the trio he'd used on several previous albums, most recently 2004's EnRoute: bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart. Never one to rest on his laurels, Scofield has throughout his career applied his virtuosity to several different streams of jazz, ranging from fusion-esque to orchestral to straight bop. This Meets That is something of a mixed bag. The opening track, the Scofield-penned "The Low Road," is a swinging funk jam that's one of several tunes on the record to employ a four-piece horn section. It's a smoker of a track, with Scofield often teasing with distortion but never straying so far away that it might be called unmelodic. In addition to the ...
