The second album of Grant Green's thorough jazz-funk makeover, Green Is Beautiful finds the guitarist growing more comfortable with harder, funkier R&B than he seemed on the softer-hued Carryin' On. The switch from Fender Rhodes electric piano back to the more traditional Hammond organ certainly helps give the session a little extra grit, but it doesn't return Green to the land of soul-jazz by any means. Green Is Beautiful is still explicitly commercial and accessible to non-jazz audiences, and (purist objections notwithstanding) that's not necessarily a bad thing. Green's take on James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now" is one of the funkiest items in his rare-groove period; it may be chordally very simple, but the groove is tight and percolating, and Green, tenor saxophonist Claude Bartee, and trumpeter Blue Mitchell all come up with hot, exciting solos. The album also benefits from Green's discovery of composer and occasional organist Earl Neal Creque, who contributes two bright, slinky, horn-driven originals: "The Windjammer," which became one of the signature tunes of Green's late period, and "Dracula." They help give the album a more original voice, and indicate that Green was actively making himself at home in his new musical environment, not just mixing dull originals with phoned-in ...

Despite its rather silly sci-fi cover, 1974's THRUST is a top-tier album by composer/keyboardist Herbie Hancock. On this excellent follow-up to the legendary HEADHUNTERS, Hancock lays into some seriously deep grooves on his Fender Rhodes, and is backed by many of the same musicians from HEADHUNTERS, including bassist Paul Jackson and woodwind master Bennie Maupin.
The opening track, "Palm Grease," is a slick future-funk workout that breaks down into highly percussive passages, while "Actual Proof" coasts along on Hancock's bright melodies, which are enhanced by Jackson's burbling bass lines and Maupin's deft, breezy alto-flute playing. Of the four lengthy pieces that make up THRUST, "Butterfly" stands out as the disc's most reflective track, with Hancock taking his typically frenetic jazz fusion sound into surprisingly delicate and lyrical territory. Having long since established his funk credentials, Herbie Hancock continues the direction of Head Hunters and its U.S. successors here, welding himself to the groove on electric keyboards while Bennie Maupin again shines sardonic beams of light on a variety of reeds. In "Doin' It," the most successful track, Hancock makes a more overt bid for the dancefloor, for the tune is basically one long irresistible groove with a very commercial-sounding bridge. Again Hancock chooses to recompose one of his standards; "Cantelope [sic] Island" is almost unrecognizable converted into a sauntering, swaggering thing. Shatterproof formed in the summer of 2003, when friends, Ryan Lang and Scott Ray, decided to jam together one afternoon. After a long session, the two thought they had a such great sound and wanted to expand it even further with amazing leads and guitar solos. Ryan knew someone who was perfect for the job and he contacted Jake Loehr, an eager guitarist that had a unique style and amazing skill. Not long after his audition, Jake joined the group and provided what was needed to take their sound to a new direction.With the writing process already started and songs starting to take shape, they began to search for a bass player and a vocalist. That following year was a constant cycle of temporary bassists and singers. It seemed that nothing would come together until Jake mentioned he knew a bass player named Cody Mason, who was looking for a band to jam with. The next day, Cody came to the band's practice to audition. After learning most of the band's material within one session, Cody became their bassist. All they needed now, was a vocalist that could write some aggressive lyrics and take command of the stage. Ryan and Scott had an old friend, who they knew was into music just as much as they were. That person was Ryan Crawford, a singer and talented song writer. Within the next two months, Ryan Crawford re-wrote all the lyrics that the band had written previously, in favor for something more straight forward and in-your-face. With a solid lineup and a full set of songs finally complete, Shatterproof went out and began to play shows for the next two years. In late 2006, the band had to make the difficult decision to replace Ryan Crawford as their vocalist and began auditioning new singers.
