| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Go! CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa ...
| | Suzzy Roche Songs From An Unmarried Housewife And Mother, Greenwich Village, USA CD (2000)
Go! music CDs
$15.05 Not many people would open a disc with a tin whistle and voice version of "Yankee Doodle," but Suzzy Roche pulls it off. A former member of folksinging sister trio, the Roches, Suzzy invited sister Maggie, daughter Lucy, and Loudon Wainwright III (Lucy's father) to join her on this joyful collection. Wainwright and Jules Shear add hillbilly harmonies on "Cold Hard Wind," while Wainwright also adds banjo. There's a Roche-like novelty penned by Maggie Roche, "G Chord Song," and "To Alaska With Love" is an epic love story, the kind that songwriters love to tackle. "Love Comes to Town" is an ode to open hearts while the other side is told in the wistful "No Such Thing as Love." Tasteful as ever, David Mansfield takes on dobro and pedal steel chores while Curtis Stigers sits in on trumpet for the cocktail jazzy "Out of the Blue." Producers Stewart Lerman and Roche have just the right touch with her heartfelt and strong folk music; it sings out rather than sits back sounding quaint -- no easy task for a voice as sweet and old-fashioned as Roche's. ~ Denise Sullivan
Recorded at The Shinebox and Passport Recording, New York, New York.
Personnel: Suzzy Roche (guitar); Loudon Wainwright III (vocals, banjo); Lucy Roche (vocals); Steuart Smith (electric guitar, banjo, harmonica, accordion, piano); David ...
| | Harris Eisenstadt Soul And Gone CD (2005)
Go! songs
$16.45 Harris Eisenstadt's fifth album as a leader features a sextet of young Chicago players and all-star names. The lesser-known names are vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, gracefully waltzing through the drummer's complex compositions, and reeds player Jason Mears, who seems too busy keeping up with the score to truly shine. Bassist Jason Roebke has previously proved his worth (in Tigersmilk and the Scott Fields Ensemble, among other projects). Vandermark 5 trombonist Jeb Bishop and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker are the most recognizable voices in the group, and live up to the expectations their names stir. Bishop's playing is soulful as ever and downright moving in "Seed," a piece dedicated to composer Henryk Górecki. Parker's dreamy lines steal the spotlight in "Portrait of Holden Caulfield" and remain a defining element of the album throughout. Eisenstadt's writing borrows from post-bop, structured improvisation, and contemporary classical. It is neither Chicago jazz nor West Coast jazz, but something that encompasses both. This album sees him moving deeper into free-form territory, with lots of sections that are not notated but shaped, with varying results. These moments are contrasted with sharply written passages, as in "Kola #2 (Reduction)" and "The Evidence of Absence Is Not Necessarily the Absence of Evidence." The latter is the album's undisputed highlight for its witty complexity, swing, and tight ensemble playing, although "And a Hard Place" makes an excellent contender to the title, with its slow-paced, heavy theme and another dead-on solo from Bishop. Eisenstadt's music is often more melody-based than beat-driven, which is not common among composing drummers. So, by all means, don't approach The Soul and Gone as a drummer's record. Approach it instead as one of the finest American creative jazz releases of 2005. ~ François Couture
Prolific young drummer/percussionist/composer Harris Eisenstadt has collaborated with a long list of notable composer/improvisers all over the world in a wide variety of formats and musical genres (including contemporary classical, jazz/improvised music, West African/Javanese dance, theater, and film scores) and on more than 25 recordings on 17 different labels. As LA Weekly's Greg Burk put it, "Harris Eisenstadt is a composer with limbs prodding into spontaneous, post-bop, and neoclassical. He works with the best." His fifth CD as a leader, The Soul and Gone, captures his young all-star sextet of the same name at Chicago's famed 3030.Musicians: Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Jeb Bishop (trombone), Harris Eisenstadt (drums), Jason Mears (alto saxophone and b-flat clarinet), Jeff Parker (electric guitar), Jason Roebke (contrabass)"Last May LA-based drummer Harris Eisenstadt came to Chicago to play with three different ...
