Collection album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda ...
| | Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense DVD (1984) Widescreen
Collection CD music
$25.39 Those who aren't familiar with the work of seminal 1980s band The Talking Heads may find themselves becoming instant fans after viewing this incredibly entertaining concert film. It starts with David Byrne stepping out alone on empty stage with an acoustic guitar to sing "Psycho Killer." The rest of the musicians follow one by one and the stage gradually fills to bursting with powerful, tightly orchestrated brilliance. Director Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PHILADEPLPHIA) expertly captures the music's energy, fusing cinema with performance to create something more than the sum of ...
| | Bon Jovi The Circle CDs (2009) With DVD
Collection music CDs
$15.55 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing ...

Collection music CDs
$11.49 Original score composed by Hans Zimmer. Original songs by Bryan Adams.
Children's flick SPIRIT tells, in animated style, the time-honored story of the friendship between an unbridled horse and a dispirited young human. Who else would be more logical to tap for the music to such an animated flick than Canadian rocker of the '80s, balladeer of the '90s Bryan Adams? Ok, it doesn't seem like a natural lock. Pop musicians do cross over to animation all the time; however, Randy Newman comes from one of the first families of film scoring and Elton John's music always seemed ready-made to majestically soar over inspirational credits. But let's not forget that Adams had a part in three of the biggest pop hits to grace movie screens ("Everything I Do (I Do It For You)," "Have You Ever Rally Loved A Woman," and "All For Love"). So, it is pretty unfailingly logical.
Solid, stirring pop songs abound here, and fellow Canadian superstar Sarah McLachlan guests ...

Her first EP, pop/folk inspired "Sister To Sister", released in December 2003, was a production of songs written by her younger sister who was tragically killed in a car accident at age eighteen.Heard's performances the past couple of years have begun to turn heads. This year, she gained 13 nominations at the 2005 Detroit Music Awards in Acoustic/Folk, Pop/Rock, and Christian/Gospel. Last year, after being nominated for seven awards, she walked away with awards for Outstanding Christian Vocalist and Outstanding Christian Songwriter. Amy Heard grew up in the small town of Macomb, Illinois. She was placed under vocal instruction at Western Illinois University at the age of twelve, after her parents heard her unexpected solo in an eighth grade musical. She soon gained early acceptance into W.I.U., where she performed with the University Dance Theatre and the Summer Music Theatre, and continued to study voice and guitar, all while still in High School. The papers called her a "triple threat talent" and she was awarded "Best Actress" and "Best Vocal Performance" ...

$13.15 | | Allen Toussaint What Is Success: Scepter And Bell Reco CD (1970)
Collection music CDs
$14.79 Kent Soul has done an exceptional job in remastering and reissuing Allen Toussaint's classic sophomore long-player -- which was known simply as Allen Toussaint -- and the "bonus" selection, a vocal-less blues-meets-funk titled "Number Nine." When these songs first surfaced circa 1970, Toussaint (piano/vocals) had become a decade-long veteran of the New Orleans' Crescent City soul movement. Under his own name as well as the pseudonym of Naomi Neville, he was a composer, producer, and even a recording session musician. He left a trail of influential R&B titles that would resound back across the pond in the form of cover versions by the likes of the Rolling Stones ("Pain in My Heart"), the Yardbirds ("A Certain Girl"), and the Who ("Fortune Teller"), along with countless others. Toussaint's uncanny musical malleability resulted in a diverse yet solid second solo outing. He is supported by Mac Rebennack (organ/guitar) (aka Dr. John), Terry Kellman (guitar), Eddie Hohner (bass), Freddie Staehle (drums), John Boudreaux (drums), Clyde Kerr (trumpet), Earl Turbinton (alto sax), and none other than Merry Clayton (backing vocals) and Venetta Fields -- perhaps the most in demand studio voices of the rock & roll era. The dramatic "From a Whisper to a Scream" perfectly captures the synergy existing between Toussaint's ultra cool delivery and the understated yet piercing lyrical indictment. Other highlights include the pop-oriented, upbeat, and classy "Sweet Touch of Love," the author's interpretation of "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky" and "Working in the Coalmine." The latter pair were likewise formerly charting sides Toussaint had inked for vocalist Lee Dorsey. Looking forward to the ensuing years, Toussaint garnered sizable clout for providing Bonnie Raitt with "What Is Success." The instrumentals "Either" and "Louie" foreshadow the type of stylish no-nonsense ...
