| | Crystal Method Vegas CD Crystal Method Discography of CDs
By capturing critical attention through some impressive compilation cuts before unveiling their full-length debut VEGAS, Crystal Method allowed themselves time to explore and develop a plethora of soundscapes, with elements ranging from spacey synthesizers and NASA samples to dense layered breakbeats. The opener "Trip Like I Do" firmly establishes the album's direction: oscillating synthesizers, hard edged drum-and-bass furor coupled with samples reminiscent of My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult. Those who still believe that American electronica cannot compare to the British electronic movement need only take a careful listen to the unrelenting-yet-tasteful sonic juxtapositions which VEGAS unleashes.

Entertainment Weekly (9/26/97, pp.78-79) - "..Their mixture of crescendoing break beats and inspiring Jesse Jackson samples places them in the vanguard of techno-rock..." - Rating: A- Vibe (9/97, p.247) - "...Entering this U.K.-dominated genre are the Crystal Method, a southern California-based duo whose pulsating debut is alive with frenetic beats, sensual melodies, and the style's trademark squiggly sound effects..." Melody Maker (10/25/97, p.53) - "...Technology may well be their forte and their medium, but The Crystal Method just want to rock your socks off....at the moment they don't quite make it but there's a lot of potential in there which, with a bit more bite, could be just the ticket." | | Toyan Spar With Me CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Vegas music CDs
$9.69 The late Byron Everton Letts (aka Toyan or Ranking Toyan) is generally remembered today for his brilliant 1981 LP How the West Was Won, on which he chatted over Roots Radics rhythms dubbed up by the legendary Scientist. But his work for the pioneering dancehall producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes was top quality as well, and that's what was collected for release in 1982 as Spar with Me on the VP label. And apart from a couple of inevitable clunkers (mostly arising from the fact that his chatting isn't in the same key as the rhythm), this album is sure to please anyone who enjoyed the classic early dancehall sounds of How the West Was Won. At the time Spar with Me was recorded, the line between roots reggae and dancehall was still fuzzy and permeable -- there are no computer beats here, just unusually heavyweight roots rhythms from the Hi Times Band and Roots Radics, over which Toyan chats in a style that sometimes recalls Big Youth (check out his introductory flourishes on "Jacket & Tie") and sometimes harks back as far as Count Machuki ("You I love and not another") but always sounds fresh and at least reasonably original. ...

This limited edition set (ONLY 300 numbered copies brings them all together with a plush box case with new updated artwork and mastering. Buy disc by disc as they are released or subscribe to the series. BY 2003 SIMON WAS SPENDING MORE & MORE TIME IN BRAZIL. HE HAD RELEASED BASTA, FORMED HIS OWN BAND S.C.H.K. (SIMON CHAINSAW & THE HIPPY KILLERS) AND STARTED TOURING AROUND BRAZIL. S.C.H.K. HAD RECORDED THE 'TOLD ME A LIE' DISC AND SIMON WAS BACK IN KREUZBURG, IN JOHNNY RIO'S STUDIO TO MIX IT. AGAIN, STEPHAN GRUJIC WAS BEHIND THE CONTROLS (HE ALSO MIXED THE BASTA DISC). WITH THE MIXING WELL UNDERWAY THE GUYS DECIDED TO TAKE A FEW DAYS BREAK. JOHNNY, WELL IMPRESSED WITH THE SOUND OF THE DISC, ENCOURAGED SIMON TO JAM & WRITE WITH STEPHAN. I'D PLAYED DRUMS WITH STEPHAN IN MOTTEK SO THEY CALLED ME IN. I WAS THRILLED!! I'D ALWAYS LIKED SIMON'S SOUND AND I'D PLAYED ON A COUPLE OF TRACKS ON FIRE DOWN BELOW, BUT THE CHANCE TO JAM, WRITE AND MAKE A COMPLETE DISC WITH HIM WAS FANTASTIC. JOHNNY HAD A BASEMENT WHICH WAS THE REHEARSAL ROOM AND IT WAS MID WINTER BY NOW SO THAT ROOM WAS LIKE AN ICE BOX. SO WE'D START JAMMING WITH COATS AND BEANIES ON, BUT BEFORE LONG THE SWEAT WOULD BE DRIPPING DOWN THE WALLS AND WE'D ALL BE STRIPPED DOWN TO NOTHING. NIGHT AFTER NIGHT WE'D GO 3 FLOORS UNDERGROUND INTO THE ICE BOX AND WALK OUT OF AN OVEN! JOHNNYS ENDLESS SUPPLY OF GLUWINE HELPED KEEP OUR TEMPERATURE & SPIRITS HIGH, AND OUR EMOTIONS RISING. WE WROTE 16 SONGS IN THE SPACE OF A FEW WEEKS. STEPHAN FINISHED MIXING 'TOLD ME A LIE' AND WE STARTED RECORDING OUR NEW SONGS. BY THEN WE WERE SO IN TUNE WITH THE GROOVE SOMETIMES WE'D GET IT ON THE FIRST TAKE. WE'D DO THE BEDS AT NIGHT AND SIMON WOULD DO HIS GUITARS AND VOICE IN THE DAY. I DON'T KNOW HOW HE AND STEPHAN DID IT BUT THEY USED UP EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY. WE CALLED IN VINZ FROM FRENCHIES 'HOLY CURSE' TO DO THE BASS TRACKS. VINZ HAS A GREAT FAT DISTORTED SOUND AND PLAYS THE BASS UPSIDE DOWN SO HE'S ABLE TO DO SOME INTERESTING DIFFERENT STUFF. THEN JOHNNY RIO CAME IN TWIDDLED A FEW KNOBS AND LAYED DOWN HIS MAGIC. PEELING OFF HIS SOLOS AND ADDING EXTRA LICKS, RHYTHMS AND SPICE TO THE SOUND. WITH THE RECORDINGS COMPLETE, SIMON ...
