| | Jake Schepps Ten Thousand Leaves CD Jake Schepps Discography of CDs
Jake Schepps takes stringband music on another adventure with the release of Ten Thousand Leaves. With engaging, dynamic material that reflects the Colorado aesthetic of roots music, the album focuses on creative composition, melodic ideas and tasteful solos. Produced by Nashville’s Matt Flinner, the album remains true to the artistic values of stringband, yet draws on certain jazz sensibilities, such as extensive musical interplay and more extended harmonies. This all-instrumental album includes original compositions by Schepps, with additions from Matt Flinner, Greg Schochet, and Eric Thorin. The material includes an Astor Piazzolla tango arranged for stringband, and a brand new Flinner tune composed specifically for this project. The centerpiece is a through-composed suite inspired by Richard Avedon’s series of portraits titled, “In the American West.” As Sing Out Magazine states, Schepps plays “nothing less than excellent music, in both form and function. Thoughtfully constructed arrangements provide depth and breadth, leaving no stone unturned, no player out in the cold.”The Expedition Quartet:Jake Schepps: 5-string banjoRyan Drickey: violinGreg Schochet: guitar and mandolinEric Thorin: bassSpecial Guests:Matt Flinner: mandolinAdam Aijala: guitar"Jake Schepps's plays well and his music is beautiful. Rather than being overtly bold or edgy, his performance is covertly calculating and intuitive, melodies easy to remember, yet always fresh and never redundant. "Progressive" string bands should always be this easy to listen to."JazzMando.com Ten Thousand Leaves Music | List Price | $14.00 (You save $1.61) | | Category | Country Albums | | Label | CD Baby | | CD Universe Part number | 7499650 | | Catalog number | 142859 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Aug 07, 2007 |

Ten Thousand Leaves album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at ...

| | Alex Leonard Down In The Depths: Interpretations Of Cole Porter CD (2001)
Ten Thousand Leaves album
$18.99 "...the disc is a class act. If you love jazz and Cole Porter, this CD will start your year off right." "...superb piano playing". "Alex Leonard and a group of terrific musicians have some serious jazz chops that make for a highly enjoyable recording." - David Hurst, Show Business"Down in the Depths should be added to the list of illustrious, unique recorded performances of Cole Porter songs and is recommended. -Dave Nathan, allaboutjazz.com"One of the most superb, finest Cole Porter collections made in recent years... It is rare to see a collection of Cole Porter as well-crafted as this one, and this is the one to top for sheer integrity and attention to what the late Cole Porter was musically creating in song form. DOWN IN THE DEPTHS is a classic approach to the music of Cole Porter, and it is flawless. Highly recommended. Perfect. - Lee Prosser, JazzReview.com "Very elegant, very beautiful music... first class job" - Joey Reynolds, WOR Radio, New York."Alex Leonard has the kind of smooth, urbane voice that fits Porter to a tee..." "Leonard is a swinging, sexy pianist..." - Jerome Wilson, Cadence Magazine"...Leonard is an important mainstay of the Big Apple, as his 2001 debut release Down in the Depths can attest to." - Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide"Every now and then, though not often, I am surprised and delighted to be so. Your CD... was just such an occassion. It is wonderful and has received much airplay on our 100,000 watt radio station." - Bruce Tater KETR-FM Radio, Texas."Leonard superbly masters the piano..." "...smooth mellow voice backed by music of the same ilk." - Laurie Lawson, electroniclink.com"With a very similar wit, Leonard has taken some Porter classics and some suprises and rearranged rhythm signatures, swapped tempos, rescored for interesting subgroups within his band, and draped his workmanlike, friendly tenor voice ...

| | Chris Walla Field Manual CD (2008)
Ten Thousand Leaves songs
$6.59 Death Cab for Cutie producer and musical mastermind steps out from his primary gig's shadow for FIELD MANUAL, a solo debut that sounds much like his main squeeze of a band. Not that there's anything wrong with that. What works on Death Cab albums works here too: layered, mid-tempo indie pop with enough guitar crunch, hooks, and political wit to bob heads and raise fists in equal measure. Two pleasant surprises: hearing Walla's sweet, accomplished vocals independent of Ben Gibbard's and the spare, melancholic closing tracks. The limited edition deluxe version features a gorgeous cloth-bound cover.
After years of yielding the spotlight to fellow Death Cabber Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla finally moves to center stage with Field Manual. Fans of Death Cab's Transatlanticism (particularly the album's second half, with its emphasis on ballads and slow-motion moodiness) will be pleased with this solo effort, since Field Manual delivers the same brand of reflective, mid-tempo indie pop. Even the faster songs seem to rarely break a sweat (with the exception of standout track "The Score"), and their quickened pace takes a backseat role to Walla's gauzy vocals and politically minded lyrics. There's nothing like "I'll Follow You into the Dark" here, no song so adorably sweet and saccharine that teenagers will clamor to slow-dance to it at their high school proms. Instead, Walla targets the head -- not the heart -- while delivering songs about crooked senators, sustainability, and American soldiers. "All hail an imminent collapse," he sings on the first track, opening the album with several seconds of layered a cappella. "You can fumble for your maps, but we're exhausted by the facts." The political commentary is sharp, and Walla smartly refuses to channel the "Rise up!" spirit of someone like Bruce Springsteen, since an indie pop release simply couldn't bear ...
