(2 Customer Reviews)
In 2007 indie rockers Rogue Wave moved from Sub Pop to Jack Johnson's Brushfire label for their third album, and the bigger, more polished sound of ASLEEP AT HEAVEN'S GATE reflects the change. No longer the intimate, bedsitter band of OUT OF THE SHADOWS, Rogue Wave sound all grown up and ready for the mainstream here. But while old fans might balk at the transformation, ASLEEP is still filled with Zach Rogue's excellent songwriting and penchant for indelible hooks. That knack, married here to a big-screen sound, is sure to score Rogue Wave a new legion of listeners.Spin (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Intensifying the light and shade of his tunes with finely detailed psychedelia, leader Zach Rogue picks up the alternative pop gauntlet R.E.M. threw away." Entertainment Weekly (p.82) - "ASLEEP is tender and well wrought...[with] psyched-out washes of guitar and vocals..." -- Grade: B Magnet (p.110) - "HEAVEN'S GATE has politics if you want them, but better still, it's a bittersweet, deceptively beautiful journey." Q (Magazine) (p.146) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[F]ull of huge indie rock stylings like Shack or Echo & The Bunnymen." Mojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Rogue's voice -- as angelic and tender as those of Buckleys tim and Jeff -- is a joy throughout." Clash (magazine) (p.112) - "'Chicago x 12' is a gorgeous stroll through alt-American indie, aided by atmospheric electronics and some dramatic guitar flourishes." Asleep At Heaven's Gate songs
$13.15 Starting in 2004, composer Bear McCreary broke the mold with his background music for the Sci Fi cable-TV channel's series Battlestar Galactica (not to be confused with the original series of the same name that ran on network television from 1978 to 1980, or the 2003 mini-series also called Battlestar Galactica). For McCreary, space was not to be the musical setting for sweeping symphonic themes, as it had been for his many predecessors. McCreary's space music was akin to world music, full of various contemporary ethnic styles and, more than anything else, drums. That's the sound heard especially on the soundtrack album for the first season and, to a lesser extent, the second season's CD as well. This time around, however, McCreary clearly states in his liner notes that he was making a virtue of necessity; if he didn't write symphonic pieces, it was because the producers "didn't want an orchestral score cluttering up their series," and, presumably, because they didn't want to pay the freight: "My approach bordering on minimalism, I set out scoring the first season with a small ensemble of ethnic percussion and woodwinds." Everything is different now. This third-season soundtrack credits 46 string players, along with nine other musicians. McCreary still loves drums, and he has a noticeable affinity for Indian music that is apparent immediately in the leadoff track, "A Distant Sadness" (which also features Raya Yarbrough singing lyrics in Armenian), as well as a taste ...
| | Ian Fisher Invasions CD (2007)
Asleep At Heaven's Gate album
$13.65 Ian Fisher is a touring singer/songwriter with his roots in Mid-Western America. From an early age he was interested in music, but it wasn't till he picked up a bass guitar and started singing at the age of 13 that his once mere interest was transformed into his life and passion. He soon switched to electric guitar and started a band with some grade school friends in his hometown of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. From very early on Ian started writing his own songs. Though the band would perform some of his songs, Ian began to take his work more seriously after it broke up when he was 17. In 2006, he began recording his first "professional" album, Invasions, and half of his first album with a band, Stained Glass. In the mean time he played dozens of shows around Missouri and wrote many new songs. As he grew older and became more interested in his studies of Political Science, the subject matter of most of his songs moved from love and emotions to political and social issues. In the summer of 2008 he went on a nation wide tour with the very politically-minded band called Holy!Holy!Holy!, finished recording ...
