| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Happy Moods music CDs
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying Max Roach as Sid Catlett on "Salt Peanuts." (Catlett does sit in on "Hot House" in a more supportive than demonstrative role.) The tracks with the brilliant Roach are on fire, particularly the super-hot "Salt Peanuts," with pianist Al Haig flying ...
| | Harold Land Take Aim CDs (1969)
Happy Moods songs
$12.35 This little-known Blue Note session by tenor saxophonist Harold Land went unreleased until this 1980 LP. Land and an obscure supporting cast (trumpeter Martin Banks, pianist Amos Trice, bassist Clarence Jones, and drummer Leon Pettis) perform five hard bop originals and a lyrical "You're My Thrill." The performances, which are now hard to find, should interest Land collectors and fans of the era's modern mainstream jazz, although overall the results are not that memorable. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Red Garland At The Prelude CDs (1959)
Happy Moods album
$15.09 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1993, Fantasy Studios, Berkely, California).
Pianist Red Garland is best known for his work with Miles Davis's groundbreaking quintet (where he played alongside John Coltrane and Philly Joe Jones), but he turned in some excellent albums as a leader as well. The two-disc set AT THE PRELUDE, a live date recorded in 1959, is one of them.
Bassist Jimmy Rowser and drummer Charles Wright lend light, propulsive support to Garland's keyboard work, which is highlighted by deft, melodic solos and his famed block chords. The repertoire includes standards ("A Foggy Day"), jazz favorites ("Cherokee"), and a host of swinging, bop-inflected blues. This package comes highly recommended to Garland enthusiasts, and should please fans of classic '50s and '60s jazz.
This recording of The Red Garland Trio during an October, 1959 club date isn't glamorous--you can hear people talking in the background and the piano isn't in perfect tune--but Red is in fine form and his band quietly sizzles behind him.
The trio (Specs Wright is on drums, Jimmy Rowser on bass) opens with "Satin Doll." Garland ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Live At Mister Kelly's CDs (2007) Remastered
Happy Moods CD music
$14.79 Ella Fitzgerald didn't lack for live recording opportunities in the late '50s, which on the surface, would make this first issue of a 1958 Chicago live club date an easy one to pass on. Verve label head Norman Granz recorded her often in the '50s with an eye to releasing live albums, which he did with her shows at Newport in 1957 and Los Angeles' Opera House in 1958 (not to mention another 1958 concert in Rome that was released 30 years later to wide acclaim). Those shows, however, differed widely from this one, which found her in front of a very small audience at Chicago's jazz Mecca Mister Kelly's (Sarah Vaughan's landmark At Mister Kelly's was recorded there four months earlier). Fitzgerald's artistry is ...

| | WMD Maze CD (2005)
Happy Moods songs
$12.65 AN ALBUM BASED ON A POEM BY AIDS VICTIMAugust 9, 2005 (Pinellas Park, FL) -- The Witthlacoochee Music Depot, aka the WMD, a band from Pinellas Park, FL , have released their debutalbum "Maze". The Maze is a journey from birth through life to death. It features the spoken word poem: The Maze and 15 other original tracks. "Reviewing this work has left a profound impact on me," Randall K. Ierna of Ranluron Music writes. "I have found myself living the songs as they play and several bring all emotions to bear."Formed in the summer of 2003, The Witthlacoochee Music Depot was aby-product of bass player Scott Lewis Chase's boredom and a promise made to his cousin many, many years earlier. Armed with a handful of songs and 3 of his cousin's poems Scott began contacting former band mates to get the ball rolling. Joe Raffo, Glenn Laubaugh, Mike McCann and Rick Lesniak all were active on the local scene but were into the idea of recording an album. One of the first songs brought in to work on was called "Withlacoochee", hence the name and the idea for the WMD."This all started years ago when my cousin Jeff wrote a series ofpoems," Scott Lewis chase, mastermind behind the WMD, explains thebackground of the new album. " One called "The Maze" stood out rightaway. I promised to try and produce an album based on the poem aboutlife. Jeff was diagnosed with AIDS a year or so later and has beenfighting the disease since then.It took quite a long time to gather the resources ...
