New Rivals album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
New Rivals CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish ...

| | John Herrmann Elephant Country CD (1999)
New Rivals album
$15.15 A brilliant lyricist with a gift for drawing you into his harmonic melodies, John Herrmann's life experiences around the globe influences his music and enraptures the listener.Anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing John perform live or by recording feels the warmth and depth of his music. This CD is 100% guaranteed for great quality and excellent listening enjoyment. Each song on this 43 minute CD has an ambience and richness that is hard to describe. John Herrmann creates a visual world with sound; from the crazy body-shaking "My Merry Go Round" to the swinging, easy waltz in "Marrach Rong", each song has a story to tell, a life to live, and a listener to please. This is what some of John's listeners have to say about Elephant Country..."Musically and lyrically, John Herrmann is elusive. On his new CD, "Elephant Country," the singer, songwriter and guitarist creates music that is somehow dense and minimalist at the same time, and lyrics that pull back at the brink of saying too much. The CD is full of such delights, and half the fun is just trying to figure out exactly what you're hearing. Clay Green, percussionist, uses dozens of percussion instruments to establish a distinct sonic atmosphere for each song. His arsenal includes a variety of African drums, finger sticks, chimes, bells, rain sticks, shakers, triangles, traditional drums and a gong."ED KEMMICK - Billings Gazette"In some ways John Herrmann is the "Cat Stevens" of the 1990s, with more experience and a wider range of instrumental backup. He pulls from world-wide influences, but makes what he has learned his own. John Herrmann's music stays with you much like a favorite meal from childhood."LIZ STRAUSS - Fan and Music Writer from Massachusetts"Every once in a while, an artist comes along whose music stops you in your tracks, who makes you sit up and take notice, who creeps in the back door of your heart when you least expect it and makes and indelible impression. John Andre Herrmann is such an artist." MARY NABER - festival organizer - Washington"There's a quality to John's music that pop artists today can't emulate. A quality found in most classical music, there's something hidden, something that makes you want to hear it again, and again."JASON KINTZLER - Editor-in-chief, The Retort, MSU-Billings ...
