Drummer and blues journeyman Sam Carr is perhaps best known for his work with Frank Foster as the Jelly Roll Kings. Following Foster's death in 1999, he formed the Delta Jukes to keep the spirit of the duo's music alive. The pyrotechnics are kept to a minimum here; instead the listener gets a heaping plate of straight-up juke-joint prime. Carr's steady rhythms recall the wonderful backbeats that propelled many of the Fat Possum roster's hill country players (not surprisingly, as Carr did sessions work for the label), and while the group's takes on Jimmy Reed and Howlin' Wolfe standards won't necessarily burn any road houses down, they'll certainly keep them rocking into the wee hours.
