It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." 'Drawn and!' is more of a documentary than a collection of songs on a CD. It spans 20 years of this guitarist, singer/songwriter's career.There's unreleased material, acoustic versions of previously released material, a remake of a friend's song as well as a remake of a classic Elton John song. 'Hero', written by Darren Johnson and Mark Fahad in 1990 for a band they were in together called Last Train Out . It was eventually released as a hard rock song, in December 2003, on the Omega Train CD 'Three Alarm Fire'. Featuring Darren on vocals and Mark on guitar. 'Levon', and acoustic guitar version of an Elton John classic. A different take on a great song. 'Roll On Gypsy', the first song Mark ever wrote, it dates back to the spring of 1989 in Promise land, PA. This version is how the song was originally envisioned, acoustic.
