2007 debut album from Swedish outfit. featuring radiant vocalist Yukimi Nagano and her close high school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrick K„llgren (bass) and H†kan Wirenstrand (keyboards), Little Dragon stepped into the spotlight with the release of their first double A-side single on Peacefrog (home to Jos‚ Gonzalez and Findlay Brown), `Twice'/'Test'. A former Rough Trade `Single of the Week'. Yukimi has sung with Sweden's Electronica-Jazz outfit Koop, and both Yukimi and Erik play live with Jos‚ Gonz lez. The album is marvelously book ended by the drifting percussion and electronic dynamics of `Scribbled Paper', showcasing another wonderful vocal performance. Little Dragon take tired musical traces and styles, give them a shot in the arm to leave us with something fresh and positive. For those who were rightfully seduced by James Blood Ulmer's stripped-to-the-bone 2005 Birthright recording, where the great harmolodic jazz, blues, and funk guitarist played a single guitar and stomped on a board and played the blues like a Delta hoodoo shaman, Bad Blood in the City will come as quite a shock. The session was recorded at the Piety Street Studios in New Orleans, and Blood made use of its atmospherics and its history as a killer room for recording the Crescent City's second-line rhythms, electric blues, and swampy funk. Once more, the album was produced by Vernon Reid -- who plays a hell of a lot of guitar here -- and Ulmer chose his old friend from the Odyssey days, Charles Burnham, to play electric violin and mandolin, along with a cast that also includes vocalist Irene Datcher, bassist Mark Peterson, harmonica player David Barnes, drummer/percussionist Aubrey Dayle, and keyboard boss Leon Gruenbaum. The tune mix is wild, ranging from the tough hard funk of the opener, "Survivors of the Hurricane," to a cover of Junior Kimbrough's "Sad Days, Lonely Nights" that keeps its blues yet gets deeply funked up with the roiling guitars of Ulmer and Reid, Barnes' spooky harmonica, violin, piano, clarinet, and a B-3!
Then there are the originals, such as Ulmer's blues tune "Katrina," which echoes "Flood in Mississippi." It feels like some strange cross between R.L. Burnside, John Lee Hooker, and Ulmer at his deepest, most soulful and driving. Reid fills in the spaces and the entire tune is a wall of beautifully chaotic yet utterly sophisticated sound. ...

MIRRORED, the band's debut full-length makes its intent clear from the onset--to ingest 50 years of rock history and regurgitate it as fractilized micro-symphonies. Despite these and other comparisons (Calexico, Magnetic Fields, etc.), however, Condon manages to make CUP's swooning Francophilia both unique and timeless, burying his New Mexico roots so deep it would seem that he has to be from somewhere in the Old World. Although the record generally lacks snappy singles, the exception being the dynamic "Nantes," it works remarkably well as a whole, resulting in an engaging and enveloping listening experience that giddily soars over a mythical Europa.

Tony Macsata's Beyond is a minimalist's dream. Guitar, bass and drums (and a brief smattering of keyboard) comprise the album's entire ensemble, and the record itself needs only five concise tracks to convey its message. This is either a function of Macsata's talent for managing his songs and keeping them in constant motion, or a result of studio time being damned expensive. Either way, after listening to Beyond, you feel like you have gotten everything you wanted from Tony Macsata.Then again, this could also be a result of a producer's input, which in this case happens to come from Aaron Katz, songwriter, percussionist, and vocalist for Percy Hill. Katz also lends his percussion talents to Macsata's album, though its style is quite a bit different from his work with Percy Hill. The album also features Patrick Dole on bass and Julie Macsata on background vocals. Though the album's strength is in its simplicity, it also can be one of its faults. For example, the album's opener, 'West Again,' begins with a basic four-chord verse progression that you feel like you've heard before. But the tune thankfully drops into a chorus that slides through brilliant harmonies by Tony and Julie. Julie's voice adds a great deal of power to Tony's lyrics whenever she appears on the album. The highlight of the album is the halfway-point song, 'Soul Set. ' Tony has the chance to display a greater portion of his vocal range, and Dole's bass line pumps energy through a very groove-oriented verse and chorus. The record also ends ...

Bionic surely pine for the days of cocksure hard rockers like Iggy Pop. Their raw take on swaggering '70s hard rock swings for the fences, and is aggressive without bullying, and sexy without coming on too strong. If anything, Bionic's defining characteristic is a sense of fun too often missing from rock music. The title track stomps through a haze of bong-smoke like Queens of the Stone Age, and "Silver Jet Plane" roars like its namesake, all forward motion and wind-tunnel gyrations.
