| Truly inspiring metal In this day and age of cut & paste metal it really is difficult to come up with music that sounds fresh & original. Opeth manages to delve into the past and sprinkle some black metal herbs over this very heavy stew. You will not be dissapointed by Opeth - Blackwater Park is one of their bench mark releases - excellent band, excellent album. Buy it - you will not waste your hard earned dollars. | Perfection? Opeth, it seems, are a difficult band to pin down. Everywhere I turn, I am faced with a completely different description of their music. So far, the best I can come up with is 'dark progressive metal with death metal vocals' but to be honest that doesn't even begin to cover it. If you hate most death vocals or can't fathom prog metal, you may still find you can quite easily enjoy an Opeth album. So, the 'Blackwater Park' album. For many fans - and, indeed, for many of those who don't adore the band but who do appreciate their music on occasion - this is seen as Opeth's best album and its easy to see why. There are the catchy, head-bangable opening riffs to 'The Funeral Portrait', the slow, atmospheric acoustic guitars of 'Harvest' and of course Mikael Akerfeldt's divine vocals. Its widely recognised by many fans of the genre that Akerfeldt has one of the best voices in the industry and he sounds fantastic on this album. Of course, writing this, I'm probably preaching to the converted. Chances are, if you're reading this you're already a fan of the band and really just want to know about the bonus tracks. So, here goes. Both are relatively slow acoustic tracks and both are (in this humble reviewers opinion) incredibly beautiful. If you already like Opeth's other acoustic tracks, you'll love these, especially the wonderful 'Still Day Beneath The Sun' where once again Akerfeldt's voice shines. It's quite simply stunning. So, should you buy this album? Well, if you've never heard Opeth before, you might be better off buying the original version of Blackwater Park, without the bonus tracks, simply because its cheaper. If you're a dedicted fan of the band, you need this album (but you already knew that). And if you're somewhere in between? Well if you don't already have a copy of Blackwater Park, I would highly recommend buying this one, but if you do, its probably not worth it for the two extra tracks. Beautiful though they are, they are admittedly not worth the extra money if you already have the album in its other form and don't adore the band. Overall though, this has got to be as close to perfection as a modern day metal album comes. Pure genius. By blue_istari (North Yorkshire, UK) This review is for a different format. |

| The ultimate music experience! DAMNATION is definitely my favorite OPETH album. This group has proven its value through the years but this time they have reached the top. It's amazing how a death metal group can write such sensitive melodies and how Mikael Akerfeld (their frontman) can express all these feelings with his voice. This album is for sure a masterpiece which should be placed in each metalhead's collection. All songs are great but for me the best is the instrumental "Ending Credits" which just enters your heart and mind and stays there forever!!
