(1 Customer Review)
Somewhere between opera and Metallica lies Dutch goth-metal juggernaut Within Temptation. With ethereal banshee Sharon Den Adel on vocals and a bed of string-laden orchestration, Within Temptation has constructed a shockingly popular (at least in their home country) storm of gaudy, complex rock. Their platinum second album, MOTHER EARTH, contains their greatest commercial triumph, the smash single "Ice Queen," a steamroller of strings, synths, and crunching guitars. It also contains folk-inflected ballads like "Never-Ending Story," perfect for role-playing boys and shy Dutch girls at Ren Faires.
Digitally remastered and expanded reissue of this Dutch Goth Metal band's 2001 album featuring four live bonus tracks: 'Deceiver Of Fools', 'Caged', 'Candles' and Ice Queen. Roadrunner. 2007.Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[A] dazzling record of immense vision and overpowering grandiose splendor." | | Alice Stuart All The Good Times CD (1964)
Mother Earth
$9.59 Alice Stuart's first album was a typical effort from the tail end of the early-to-mid-'60s folk revival, devoted almost entirely to competent renderings of various facets of the folk repertoire. There were blues ("Stackerlee"), country (the title cut), old-time music ("Leavin' Home"), a Weavers tune ("Seven Daffodils"), "Once I Had a Sweetheart," the Tom Paxton song "I Can't Help but Wonder Where I'm Bound," and a lone Stuart original, the routine period topical song "Beatnik." The only accompaniment is Stuart's guitar and, occasionally, autoharp. Although these were sung pleasantly and reverently, there's nothing to make her interpretations stand out amid numerous sub-Joan Baez coffeehouse performers of the era; in fact, they're rather characterless. The 2002 CD reissue adds eight songs that draw from a similarly wide breadth of traditional sources, recorded at the same sessions; one song ("Frankie and Johnny") has live audience response, though it's not explained in the liner notes whether that's from a separate recording setup. ~ Richie Unterberger
Alice Stuart has been an inspiration to many in the last 40 years. She made her first recording in 1964, at age 22, for Arhoolie Records. Way ahead of her time, she blazed the trail for women in rock and roll as one of the only females in the country to write her own music, front a male band, and play lead guitar on national and international circuits during the 1970s. Blues Hall of Fame inductee Dick Waterman once remarked, "There would be no Bonnie Raitt without Alice Stuart." According to Taj Mahal, "Alice cut the road that Bonnie traveled." Alice spent the mid-70s, one of the most creative musical periods of the century, making music with some of the greatest artists of that time. She toured the US and Europe with Van Morrison, Commander Cody, Michael Bloomfield and John Prine. She appeared and recorded with such artists as Jerry Garcia, Albert King, Asleep at the Wheel, John Hammond, Richard Greene, Elvin Bishop, Dave Mason, Sonny Terry, Tower of Power, Bread, and Mark Naftalin. During this period, Alice also appeared on The Dick Cavett Show, and won rave reviews from Billboard, Guitar Player, and Rolling Stone magazines.Alice's LPs on Arhoolie and Fantasy Records from 1964, 1970 and 1972 are landmark recordings. Her original songs from this period have been recorded by Jackie DeShannon, Irma Thomas, Jimmy Rabbit, and the late Kate Wolf. Alice began performing professionally in Seattle during the early 60's. After hearing early blues recordings, Alice knew ...
