Avenged Sevenfold: Rev, M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ. After solidly establishing themselves on the contemporary heavy music scene, Avenged Sevenfold wasted little time with following up their 2005 break-through effort, CITY OF EVIL. The band took a bold step on their fourth and self-titled full-length, opting to produce it themselves--a risky task indeed for such a young band. Right out of the gate, Singer M. Shadows leads A7X even further into melodic territory--but not without a little help. Lending her vocal support to the slow-grooving "Gunslinger" and the heavy country rocker "Dear God" and taking a solo turn on "(Unbound) The Wild Ride" is Nashville implant Shanna Crooks. A7X explore dramatic power metal in the epic "A Little Piece Of Heaven," while first single "Critical Acclaim" cuts close for what has become the group's signature sound. Nonetheless, it is on this self-titled set that the band sets its sights on the mainstream. Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil, and their self-titled release often focuses hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, while AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle-type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet; and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all -- a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level, while others give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles. Vocalist M. Shadows, who required surgery on his vocal cords after Waking the Fallen, shows that his training with Ron Anderson (vocal coach for Layne Staley, Axl Rose, and Chris Cornell) has been for the greater good. Rather than screaming or doing the metal growl, he sings in a few gritty voices, showing an obvious Mike Patton influence, and actually sounds pitch-perfect. His skills and the entire band's technical ferocity are flawless as ever, and although they get lost in a cluttered vision, their willingness to experiment is admirable. ~ Jason Lymangrover Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil -- perhaps overly so, as their self-titled release focuses entirely too hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature, blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, but the overall heavy metal thunder is diluted by their everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach. Left alone in the studio to record the album on their own, AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet, and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all -- a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level but most detract, and give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles, like listening to a Dream Theater album on a boom box while a nearby clock radio plays Charlie FM. Best Ablum of 2007? I think so... *BEFORE I START THIS REVIEW*- everyone who thinks this new A7X effort is a bad album and they "sold out," just wait. They have changed their sound on every album. Also, M. Shadows says he can scream better than before since his surgery! Does he have something big planned ;)? Now for the review. From the patriotic opening "Critical Acclaim" to the singles "Almost Easy" and "Afterlife" to the creepy "Lost" to "A Little Piece of Heaven" (a true masterpiece), to the soft closing "Dear God," this album rocks from, literally, cover to cover. This is a MUCH different sound for A7X. If you hated or just disliked City of Evil, this is not the album for you. The first three songs thrash to no end, as well as "Afterlife." The remainder of the album is the "experimental." They dont want to lose fans, they just want to play different kinds of music! Best Tracks on this great album- Critical Acclaim, Almost Easy, Scream, Afterlife, Lost, and A Little Piece of Heaven. My only regret was "Gunslinger." This song is a little too twangy for A7X. I also suggest the second-best album of 2007, Seether's "Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces." Submitted by R4V1$H (Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 5 found this helpful.
Hardcore and Variety I love this album! It has metal and some old school country style rock. It rocks! Submitted by Bryant (Bossier City, LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Why do people hate on it its a good album? Why is everyone hating on this album shadows abandoned the "metalcore" for a reason and it was because his voice simple couldnt take it and they said from the beginning they wouldnt want to be recognized by one variety. Its a good album in my opionion and has the best of everything its just a more alternative type of metal that in my opinion is either as good or even better than the city of evil

Avenged Sevenfold
$11.65 Avenged Sevenfold: M. Shadows (vocals); Zacky Vengenance, Synyster Gates (guitar); Johnny Christ (bass); The Roll (drums). Personnel: Synyster Gates (guitar, piano); Zacky Vengeance (guitar); The Reverend (drums). Audio Mixers: Mudrock ; Andrew Murdock. Recording information: Third Stone And Mates. Photographer: Lisa Johnson . Where Avenged Sevenfold's debut, SOUNDING THE SEVENTH TRUMPET, announced their unique metalcore sound, their follow-up, WAKING THE FALLEN, perfects it. The band manages to sound both more melodically accessible-drawing on classic metal and dark, Alice in Chains-like harmonies-and more punishing-wielding a death metal-influenced crunch. The writing and performances are stepped up, too, yielding an album that ...

| | Breaking Benjamin Phobia CD (2006)
Avenged Sevenfold
$12.59 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Breaking Benjamin: Ben Burnley (vocals, guitar); Aaron Fink (guitar); Mark James (bass guitar); Chad Szeliga (drums). On its third full-length album, PHOBIA, the Pennsylvania-based heavy-rock act Breaking Benjamin offers up another potent round of moody, riff-laden tunes. While "The Diary of Jane" revels in sheer ferocity and recalls Bush, the emotive "Breath" carries echoes of early Tool, revealing that the ensemble is intent on staying true to its 1990s alt-metal forebears. Although these influences place the group, led by emotive vocalist Ben Burnley, in the company of Nickelback and Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin distinguishes itself with a sense of earnestness and a knack for melody matched by few of its peers. While fans of the band will undoubtedly embrace PHOBIA, the consistently engaging release may also win Breaking Benjamin a new set of ...
| | Linkin Park Minutes To Midnight CD (2007)
Avenged Sevenfold
$13.95 Linkin Park: Chester Bennington, Dave Farrell , Rob Bourdon, Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Joe Hahn. After a multi-platinum debut, Grammy nominations, a successful sophomore album, sold-out tours, and a collaboration with Jay-Z, the pressure was on for Linkin Park to deliver the goods with their 2007 release, MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT. Interestingly, the alternative metal outfit, best known for mixing rap, rock, and electronic touches, deviates from their aggressive, angst-filled sound on their third outing--opting instead to dabble in moody, atmospheric rock. Opener "Wake" establishes the ethereal, synth-driven feel that characterizes much of the disc. Crunching electric guitars are few and far between, and most of the swirling, electronica-textured tracks weigh in at mid-to-downtempo. There are still moments of rock intensity, such as "Bleed It Out" (featuring one of rapper Mike Shinoda's few appearances), but the ...
| | Bullet For My Valentine Scream Aim Fire CD (2008)
Avenged Sevenfold
$12.59 Bullet for My Valentine: Matthew Tuck (vocals, guitar); Jay James (vocals, bass guitar); Padge (guitar); Moose Thomas (drums). Welsh traditionalists Bullet For My Valentine clearly get off on the classics. While they're sometimes lumped in with metalcore acts, they're much closer to old-school American thrashers from the '80s such as Metallica and Megadeth, and harsher '90s acts in the vein of Pantera. SCREAM AIM FIRE represents a significant forward for the band, with twisting dual leads charging ahead of the galloping rhythms and dynamic song structures. It's not all head-forward aggression, however, as "Hearts Burst Into Fire" flirts with emo and "Say Goodnight" glosses the classic power ballad with a fresh coat of paint. Despite that, the lasting impression they leave is the acrid scent of scorched eardrums courtesy of adrenalized tracks like the warp-speed "Last to Know" and "Ashes of the Innocent." With metal splintering into so many camps, ...
| | Disturbed Indestructible CD (2008)
Avenged Sevenfold
$11.39 Disturbed: David Draiman (vocals); Dan Donegan (guitar, electronics); John Moyer (bass guitar); Mike Wengren (drums). Audio Mixer: Neal Avron. Recording information: Groovemaster, Chicago, IL. Photographer: Joey Lawrence. Disturbed is one of the few bands that can be uncompromisingly cynical and captivatingly inspirational at the same time. If 2005's TEN THOUSAND FISTS was a call to arms, then INDESTRUCTIBLE is a rampaging battle cry. Disturbed enters the melee with all guns blazing and refuses to grant mercy up until the very last track. The band seems to abhor the notion of "filler," so each track on INDESTRUCTIBLE was crafted with forceful purpose. The simple chord changes are brutal, lucid, and infectious; the production ...

$9.99 Alter Bridge: Myles Kennedy (vocals, guitar); Mark Tremonti (guitar, background vocals); Brian Marshall (bass guitar); Scott Phillips (drums). Following an acrimonious split with Wind-Up Records, the Atlanta-based hard-rock act Alter Bridge soldiered on with 2007's BLACKBIRD, a set of post-grunge anthems staunchly in the vein of its debut, ONE DAY REMAINS. The former members of Creed have clearly gelled with their new lead ...
