The ultimate tale of love, honor and sacrifice during the bloodstained French Revolution is movingly brought to life in this sumptuous production. The dashing Chris Sarandon (The Princess Bride) stars in dual roles as the cynical lawyer Sydney Carton and the disenchanted aristocrat Charles Darnay, both in love with the same woman (Alice Krige, Star Trek: First Contact). Also starring Peter Cushing (Star Wars), this Golden Globe-nominated version of the Charles Dickens classic thrillingly captures all the drama and emotion of one of history's most explosive eras. The French Revolution serves as the backdrop for this television adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel. Sydney Carton is an apathetic, indifferent lawyer, who suddenly discovers the meaning of sacrifice and responsibility when he comes to the aid of those injured during the war. But Carton's life is further complicated by a lookalike, who is smitten with the same woman Carton loves. Charles Dicken's classic tale of a man who gives his life for his friend to ensure the happiness of the woman they both love. "Tale of Two Cities", a masterpiece Dicken's novel "A Tale of Two Cities" was a masterpiece, and this TV film rendering of the novel is a masterpiece of film. Chris Sarandon (a highly versatile actor) accomplishes the difficult task of playing two characters, Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay. Alice Krige (in her film debut) is Lucie Manette, a woman loved by both men. Peter Cushing flawlessly portrays Alexandre Manette, Billy Whitelaw is sinister as Madame Defarge, and veteran actress Flora Robson plays Miss Pross. There were excellent performances by the entire cast. Nothing creates more powerful drama than the plight of ordinary individuals within the broader story of social or revolutionary upheaval, and this is faithfully wrought in this film. It is the supreme tale of supreme sacrifice, a sacrifice of one's life in order that other loved ones may live. The film concludes (Carton is standing at the guillotine as a substitute for Darnay) with the memorable line, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known." This film is a must for anyone who likes to collect excellent, classic films with actors and actresses equiped for classic roles. Submitted by Roger (Mount Vernon, OH) Was This Review Helpful? | | David "Fathead" Newman Straight Ahead CD (1960)
Tale Of Two Cities film
$9.85 The title of this 1961 release best sums up this quartet album. There is nothing particularly innovative about this recording, but the level of expertise and musical maturity displayed here is truly astonishing. This is simply straight-ahead hard bop performed by some of the finest musicians in 1960s jazz, including saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman and pianist Wynton Kelly.
Newman's playing is not only confident, it is unbelievably inspired. He rips through all six selections here, employing ...
