Garth Brooks was the winner of the 1990 Country Music Association's Horizon Award, given to a new artist with the most potential of devloping into a major star.
The Bruce Springsteen of Nashville. A country purist's nightmare. The savior of modern country. Brooks wears many hats (all of them cowboy), but as his legions of fans will tell you without provocation, he turned the '90s country music industry around, damn near single-handed. His mixture of honky-tonk, rock & roll and radio-friendly power balladry struck a chord with middle America, and earned him the contemporary country crown. NO FENCES is seminal Garth, the perfect place to start for a novice, and an indispensable item for any Brooks fan. It features both Brooks' thoughtful side (the intelligently-crafted cheating song "The Thunder Rolls) and his rocking, celebratory side (the proudly proletariat "Friends In Low Places," which would do Hank Jr. proud).
Digitally remastered by Denny Purcell (Georgetown Masters).

No Fences
$10.39 In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop.
The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Without them, Madonna's very existence would be highly unlikely. With its Latin beat and gospel harmonies, "Lay Your Love All Over ...
| | Brooks & Dunn Greatest Hits Collection CD (1997)
No Fences
$9.99 A greatest hits collection is almost a redundancy for this chart-topping contemporary country duo, since nearly everything they touch turns to gold (if not platinum). Nevertheless, this compilation condenses the band's catalog, including three brand new tracks, into 19 sparkling gems of country-pop, bound to please both longtime fans and curious first-timers. They're all here, from the band's stellar cover of the pop hit "My Maria" to beer-swiggin' jukebox faves like "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and "Honky Tonk Truth."
What comes across most strongly on this album is the consistency of Brooks and Dunn's work, as it moves from ...
| | Clint Black Greatest Hits CD (1996)
No Fences
$6.75 "Like The Rain" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Clint Black is at the vanguard of modern country music, having been among the first to successfully blend the honky-tonk feel of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell with the sound of current pop and rock. The one tune on this collection of his 1989-1996 work that he didn't write isn't a Williams or Frizzell tune or anything like that; it's a cover of the Eagles' "Desperado." There are three other previously-unreleased Black tracks here to go with a dozen hits that cover the highlights of his so-far very consistent, very modern career.
All of Black's milestones are here, from the moody, atmospheric "Like The Rain" to the bluesy groove of "Half Way Up." Not just a pretty face with a cowboy hat, Black shows off the breadth of his compositional prowess, and a great workingman's voice.
Along with Garth Brooks, Clint Black was part of the first wave of "hat acts"--cowboy-hatted ...

| | Alan Parsons Ammonia Avenue CD (1984)
No Fences
$5.95 One of the most interesting aspects about the Alan Parsons Project is the band's ability to forge a main theme with each of its songs, while at the same time sounding extremely sharp and polished. Much of this formula is used in Ammonia Avenue, only this time the songs rise above Parsons' overall message due to the sheer beauty of the lyrics partnered with the luster of the instruments. The album touches upon how the lines of communication between people are diminishing, and how we as a society grow more spiritually isolated and antisocial. But aside from the philosophical concepts prevalent in the ...
