ROPIN' THE WIND was the first country album to debut at the top of the Billboard Pop Album chart. It was good news for both Garth and country music because it meant that the genre was expanding to a pop audience. Yet this also made many traditionalists nervous: "he's going `pop'," they cried.
The album opens with the bluegrassy "Against The Grain," with its nothing-ventured-nothing-gained theme. It is followed by the cowboy blues "Rodeo," which features another topic close to the hearts of country music fans, and "What She's Doing Now," a powerful ballad immersed in steel guitar. Halfway through ROPIN' THE WIND and there's not even a trace of "pop music." In fact, Garth could even be mistaken for Randy Travis on "Cold Shoulder." "In Lonesome Dove" is a beautiful Western narrative, while "Papa Loves Mama" talks of truckers, diesels, wine bottles, the penitentiary, and the graveyard; when's the last time you heard a song like that on a Michael Bolton album?
Yes, Garth is all country on ROPIN' THE WIND--even though he fervently covers "Shameless," a song written by his idol Billy Joel. But really, with that twang, the catch in his voice, the steel guitars and the blue-collar themes, how can anyone doubt Garth's devotion to traditional country?

BAND DESCRIPTIONStonecircle is a vibrant five-piece, Celtic fusion band. The goal of the band has always been to create a musical experience that is both ethereal and beautifully uplifting. Stonecircle music is a language of haunting melodies and mystical storytelling. Of their music, Irish music critic, John O'Regan describes them in these terms, "Here are six pieces that sound like an orchestra exploring the narrative fabric of Celtic folk traditions in a way no US band has done before them." Together they create the other wordly sound that has only been described as a cinematic soundscape.===============BAND BIOSKrista Baker (violin, fiddle) Krista is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah but has traveledextensively throughout her life. She began studying piano privately at age 7 and violin at age 9. Krista attended the University of Utah where she was heavily involved in music and played in the Honors String Quartet. She holds a B.S. in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administrationfrom the University of Utah. Krista has had several wonderful performance opportunities to play violin with Ballet West, Promised Valley Playhouse Orchestra, City Rep Orchestra, and string quartet performances throughout thewestern United States.------Nina Cooley (flute, whistle, percussion)Nina Cooley was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and is the fourth of six children. She describes herself as a military brat who has lived in several states and abroad. Nina attended Southwest Texas State University, the University of Texas at Austin, and graduated from The Evergreen State College, where she received her degree in Music and minored in Music Theater. She currently teaches Kindergarten and private piano, flute, and voice lessons. Nina speaks fluent Greek, Spanish, and Japanese. Nina has been involved in several musical performances including Hello Dolly, Barnum, The Devil and Daniel Webster, My Turn on Earth, and West Side Story.
