An all-star cast of jazz, blues, and fusion guitarists gives Jeff Beck's catalog a whirl in this hourlong instrumental tribute to one of the U.K.'s finest six-stringers. The back line of drummers Simon Phillips and Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Stu Hamm, keyboardist Mitchel Forman, and rhythm guitarist/producer Jeff Richman (who also solos on "El Becko") provides unifying glue to the proceedings. Not surprisingly, the ten-title track list concentrates on Beck's generally lyric-free fusion work that started with 1975's Blow by Blow. Jimmy Herring has long been the lead guitar go-to guy on the jam band scene, and his credentials read like a veritable who's who within that niche: he's been heard with Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh & Friends, the Allman Brothers Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, even the Dead (post-Jerry Garcia, of course). In 1999, Concord Jazz launched its Ballad Essentials series with this superb Carmen McRae collection, which spans 1980-1987. The influential singer recorded for Concord on four occasions; after teaming up with George Shearing for 1980's Two for the Road and joining forces with Cal Tjader on 1982's Heat Wave, McRae paid tribute to Nat "King" Cole on 1983's You're Lookin' at Me and visited Long Beach, CA, for 1987's excellent Fine and Mellow: Live at Birdland West. The only track that's out of place on this CD is "Fine and Mellow," which is a 12-bar blues instead of a ballad.
