This is one of the World's Greatest Jazz Band's better studio albums. The repertoire has standbys ("Bourbon Street Parade," "The Eel" and "What's New"), "Mercy Mercy Mercy" and some newer and lesser-known material. The all-star lineup (trumpeters Yank Lawson and Billy Butterfield, trombonists Vic Dickenson and Eddie Hubble, tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman, Bob Wilber on clarinet and soprano, pianist Ralph Sutton, bassist Bob Haggart and drummer Gus Johnson) is particularly strong and most of the players get features. Best are a Lawson-Haggart duet on "Smile," Freeman's "The Eel" and Butterfield's warm sound and lyrical style on "What's New." ~ Scott Yanow
Liner Note Author: Leonard Feather.

What's New CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, ...

| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert CD (1960)
What's New songs
$11.59 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together a seamless whole, ...
| | Elvis Presley Essential Elvis, Vol. 6: Such A Night CD (2000)
What's New album
$10.49 Since Elvis Presley reissue specialists Roger Semon and Ernst Mikael Jorgensen began their Essential Elvis series in 1986 (long before they were given overall responsibility for the Presley catalog), the joke has been that "essential" is exactly what the releases are not, at least in the common meaning of "indispensable," because they consist largely of alternate takes of songs that are almost invariably better performed in their better known versions. In the sense of distilling the essence of Presley's work, the series actually does live up to its name, giving a glimpse into the studio while the singer is working, and presenting his music as it comes together. The first three volumes contained material from '50s recording sessions leading up to Presley's departure for his stint in the army, then the fourth and fifth volumes jumped ahead to the early '70s. Such a Night, the sixth volume, returns to chronological order, picking up where the third volume, Hits Like Never Before, left off by starting with Presley's first session back from the army in 1960 and continuing to select tracks from the non-soundtrack work he did in RCA's Studio B in Nashville through 1964. As annotators Colin Escott and Jorgensen point out, these sessions resulted in 81 masters, of which only 20 get alternate treatment here. (The album leads off with the standard version of the title song, but it is preceded by several false starts.) The choice of what to include seems to have been predicated more on finding good, interesting takes than on using the best songs, since hits like "It's Now or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?," as well as great rockers like "(Marie's the Name Of) His Latest Flame" and "Return to Sender," all of which were recorded at these sessions, are not featured. Still, one gets to hear well-performed outtakes of such favorites as "Stuck on You," "Fever," "Surrender," "Little Sister," "Suspicion," and "Memphis Tennessee." Sometimes the take compares ...
| | Sky Cries Mary Here & Now CD (2005)
What's New CD music
$18.99 Soundtrack of dream-vision compositions, seamlessly interwoven tapestry of rhythm, lyric and melody. Dissonant, ethereal and infernal, mind expanding, ambient, space-rock with cinematic wordplay. The resulting mix can't be quantified. It must be heard to be experienced. In fact, it can't be heard without experiencing it. The origins can be traced back to 1986. Sky Cries Mary recorded for the indie label New Rose Records. 1989 the group released an album titled Until the Grinders Cease. In 1990 they released a five-song EP titled Don't Eat the Dirt. In quick succession, Anisa, Roderick, bassist Joe Howard, drummer Ben Ireland, guitarist Ivan Kral, keyboardist Gordon Raphael, and underground DJ Todd Robbins together released a second EP in 1991 entitled Exit at the Axis, on World Domination Records. Critics: "Sky Cries Mary seems as comfortable on earth as on the astral plane...a spacey, spiritual swirl, a dream you don't want to end." In 1993 the group released a full-length album, A Return to the Inner Experience, followed up with additional national touring and various personnel shifts that brought guitarist Michael Cozzi (formerly of Shriekback) and bassist Juano to the lineup. This Timeless Turning, the fifth release, was recorded and released on World Domination, while the group continued its touring through America and Japan. 1994 highlights: Conan O'Brian show, the John ...

What's New MP3 Album
$16.55 The bassoon is primarily relegated to providing background colors within a symphony orchestra, but much like the late Eric Dolphy turned the bass clarinet into a lead instrument in a small group jazz setting, Daniel Smith intends to establish his ungainly woodwind as a jazz instrument. Smith's second CD as a leader for the English label Zah Zah features pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist John Sullivan, and drummer ...
