Having made their LP debut with half an album's worth of repackaged oldies, the Sweet then followed through with an entire disc of the things, drawing from both their own recent back catalog and that of songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, to create a record of almost unholy pop pleasure. For the Sweet were not the only arrow in the Chinn and Chapman quiver. They were scoring hits, too, with New World, with their "Tom Tom Turnaround" ranking among the most mawkishly compulsive songs in the duo's entire catalog. Mongo Santamaria is well known for his traditional Afro-Cuban work from the 1960s, but this tasty twofer brings together a pair of excellent albums the legendary percussionist cut in the 1970s. MONGO '70 is a deeply funky session that finds Santamaria stepping beautifully into the soul-jazz trend of the time. Backed by a crack band, and benefiting from smart arrangements and polished production, MONGO '70 mixes Latin and '70s grooves in a way that stands up decades later.
MONGO AT MONTREUX, recorded in '71, is a ferocious live set that has Santamaria leading his band full-tilt through straight Latin, Afro-Cuban jazz, soul-jazz, boogaloo, funk, and covers of pop and R&B tunes. (The finale is a blistering version of the Temptations' "Cloud Nine," for example). The energy tops any of the man's studio efforts from the period, and the overall vibe is guaranteed to get the body moving. Getting MONTREUX and MONGO '70 under one cover makes for a win-win situation.
