Coathangers
$12.19 After the surprising alt-country feel of Rilo Kiley lead singer Jenny Lewis's debut solo album, RABBIT FUR COAT, her band released their most eclectic and self-assured album, 2007's UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT. Lewis's second solo album, ACID TONGUE, neatly synthesizes the best aspects of both those albums with a newfound breeziness of spirit. The 11 songs swing easily from the rockabilly twang of "The Next Messiah" to the sensuous, swirling "Bad Man's World," with the soulful ...

| | Cosmarama: Blow Your Cool Vol. 2: 20 Top Prog/Psych Behemoths From The Uk And Europe CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Coathangers
$15.89 There's a lot more prog than psych in this collection compiled by Nick Saloman of the Bevis Frond, and while Saloman's ongoing adventures in record collecting have made for a number of fine discs in the past, Cosmarama is easily one of Psychic Circle's lesser efforts. Cosmarama is primarily devoted to second-string prog and latter-day psych acts, and while both genres have a long history of encouraging musicians to stretch out beyond the tolerance of casual listeners, trimming their songs down to the length of an A-side often imposes a welcome sense of concision on their music. However, even in three- to five-minute bursts, most of the selections on Cosmarama have a tendency to meander, and a conspicuous lack of strong melodies weighs down this material. (Ginger Ale's cover of the Lee Dorsey classic " "Get out of My Life Woman" barely seems to have the same tune as the original, taking this disc's unspoken theme to a new and unexpected height.) A few cuts get by on sheer outrage or eccentricity, such as "Feline Woman" by Pussy (yep, you read that right), the Spinal Tap-ish "Love Song" from Corporal Gander's Fire Dog Brigade, the low-budget Blood, Sweat & Tears moves of CWT's "Widow Woman," and "Devil Woman," an endearingly clumsy Black Sabbath rip from Silence. But the six-minute slog through the opening cut by Distant Jim is a more common example of what Cosmarama has to offer, and this disc gets pretty tiresome by the time Richard St. Clair & Forum's "Give Me Back" finally comes to an end. Folks looking for rare prog rock nuggets are better off with Psychic Circle's earlier investigation of this territory, Blow Your Cool: 20 Prog/Psych Assaults from the UK and Europe. ~ Mark Deming
The Psychic Circle label makes another entry into the uncrowded field of reissues of British and European rarities from the early progressive rock era with Blow Your Cool, which collects twenty 1969-1974 tracks that have never before appeared on compilations. We are talking rare and obscure here; when the most well known bands on a comp are the Rattles, Mogul Thrash, Dream Police, and Egg (though a stray item by blue-eyed soul hitmakers the Foundations finds its way on as well), it's material not apt to even be in the collection of the prog rock specialist. Despite its noble intentions and fine annotation, however, it might not so much convince listeners that the genre is a repository of buried treasures as it will reinforce notions that the genre itself wasn't so illustrious to begin with. The trademarks of early prog (and late psychedelia bleeding into prog) are all here, in diverse colors: complex riffs and tempo turnarounds, earnest vocals that can verge on the ostentatious, lyrics with a cosmic tinge, occasional hints of blues and boogie, and heavy (and at times lumpy) guitar-organ blends. Good melodies and songs aren't too plentiful, however, and ...
