The title track is a 27- minute rendition of an ancient prayer, attributed to the second century mystic Rabbi Nechunia ben Hakana. The piece begins as a gentle wafting song with guitar accompaniment and slowly builds to an intense crescendo with various kinds of hand percussion and a guitar sound reminiscent of the sitar. "Hegyon Layla" (Night Contemplation) is a slow tambour solo in a style reminiscent of the early stages of an Indian raga. It features a recurring motif that seems to be constantly fading into space only to begin again. The Hebrew term "hegyon" is taken from the book of Psalms where it denotes a certain musical style. This spacious, repetitive piece is evocative, tranquil and conducive to meditation. "Tov Lehodot" (It is good to praise) is upbeat and joyous. Glass's singing, percussion, and 12 string guitar create a kind of ancient pop song. Remarkably, the music is all solo performance and no overdubbing techniques are used, yet the music conveys a jubilant fullness, rhythmic and tuneful.Back to a more contemplative mode.
