| | Heavy Metal Box CD (6 Customer Reviews)
Housed in a faux Marshall amp head that goes up to 11 (a cheeky nod to Spinal Tap), this four-disc Rhino box set presents a wildly eclectic look at heavy metal in its various permutations, ranging from glammed-up hard rock to fierce, pummeling thrash. Beginning with late-1960s proto-metal act Iron Butterfly (the organ-tinged "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida") and closing with a '90s track by the revered Brazilian ensemble Sepultura (the rumbling "Dead Embryonic Cells"), the collection covers a lot of ground, making time for the opera-like drama of power metal (see Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" and Helloween's "A Little Time") and the lusty rock of the leather-loving variety ( Spinal Tap's gleefully lewd "Big Bottom" and Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me"). While some may balk at having Great White and Slayer on the same disc, the strength of the compilation is in its diversity, which proves that metal is far from an easily definable genre. Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Can't Knock This I've really got no complaints about this. Nearly every track here is an essential metal classic, and all the bases are covered: the sleazy, the thrashy, the poppy, the proggy, the downright heavy as hell. We begin with the very earliest days of prototypical metal, and continue right up until the early '90's. Has the box continued on for another disc or two, there'd be all kinds of "Well, so-and-so doesn't belong here, they're not metal!" going on, but I think we can all agree that each song here (even the ones I don't like, and I personally can't stand "Talk Dirty To Me") deserves a spot in this set. Or two, if they're important enough, like Metallica, Priest, Maiden and Sabbath assuredly are. (And whoever else I overlooked.) About the only gripes I can think of are the omission of Motley Crue. Probably Rhino couldn't get the rights to any of their songs, but I would've dumped one of the King Diamond/Mercyful Fate songs for one of theirs. (Early Def Leppard is missing as well, probably for the same reason.) Anyway, there's not really much here that I don't already own, so I won't be ponying up for it. But for the casual fan or the beginner who wants to know just what this metal thing is about, this is THE place to start. Submitted by Fizz (Delmarva) Was This Review Helpful? HEAVY METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. my brothers, come bow to the holy grail that is the metal box!!!. thank god there is no cannibal corpse, no limp bizkit, no slipknot!!!!!!!!!!!! and yet no motley crue. anyway before you grab your demon swords and stab me i just want to say that this box set is the perfect for christmas. just like what the hip hop box is for the rappers and the disco box is for the disco dancers but for us the metal box is the pinnacle of heavy metal!. rock on. No Ozzy or Sabbath? SHARON!!!! I'm sure Sharon is behind this and they couldn't get the rights to put Ozzy/Sabbath on this box. A few Zep tunes could be on here too, but still a good box. Submitted by Mike (CHITOWN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Love it I imported this and I love it. It has a great range of artists and songs. And it looks great on my shelf with my other boxsets. Submitted by David (Lithgow, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 3 found this helpful.
no ozzy or sabbath? for all the people out there who are complainign about no ozzy or ozzy with black sabbath.... first of all there are only a handful of songs when Ozzy was with Sabbath that are actually any good! bands like slayer, anthrax.... and others have performed some of those songs better. and there should be much more stuff with Dio in this boxset Submitted by kevintheincarnate (hayward, ca) Was This Review Helpful?
