Half greatest-hits album, half career summary, the full three-disc version of 2007's 45th-anniversary collection, DYLAN (also available as a single-disc distillation), is a public service to both Bob Dylan neophytes and fans who wrote off his late-'70s-to-mid-'80s fallow period. For the latter group, the best songs from Dylan's "lost years" are cherry-picked, proving that even amid periods of inconsistency, Hibbing, Minnesota's favorite son never lost his spark of genius.

These 51 songs--arranged in chronological order--track Dylan's development from Greenwich Village folk hero to surrealist rocker to grizzled bluesman. All the key tracks from his glory days are here, from "Blowin' in the Wind" to "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," but perhaps more illuminating is the esoterica; anyone not paying close attention to Dylan's career left-turns could easily have missed such almost-lost gems as "Dark Eyes" (from the largely unremarkable EMPIRE BURLESQUE) or "Blood in My Eyes" from trad folk/blues album WORLD GONE WRONG. When the dust of history settles, the lesser-known tunes collected on DYLAN will be just as important as the "hits."Dirty Linen (p.73) - "[This compilation] brings together some of his best songs. Dylan's always been a restless and creative spirit, and his music reflects his shifting philosophies and tumultuous Zeitgeist."

Albert Collins Frozen Alive! CD  (1981)

Dylan album
CD $10.19  4 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
Albert Collins & The Icebreakers: Albert Collins (vocals, guitar); Marvin Jackson (guitar); A.C. Reed (tenor saxophone); Allen Batts (organ); Johnny B. Gayden (bass); Casey Jones (drums). Recorded live at The Union Bar in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 5-8, 1981. For the fans of Albert Collins who never got the chance to see him live (Collins passed away in 1993), FROZEN ALIVE! does its part to rectify the injustice. While Collins's "icy" guitar style (so called for his cool, dark-hued tone and space-filled approach to phrasing) was always very well captured on studio recordings, Collins was a consummate showman, and his normally superior skill was pushed to even greater heights before a responsive audience. On FROZEN ALIVE!, the master axe-slinger appears with the Icebreakers, a backing band comprised of a rhythm guitarist, bassist, drummer, organist, and tenor saxophonist. The Icebreakers rip it up on the old-school blues of "Caldonia," cool it out on the groove-laden "Got a Mind to Travel," and slip into pop-and-lock funk on "I Got That Feeling." Collins, of course, takes center stage throughout, singing and, moreover, making his Telecaster cry, soar, and stop to ponder, before barreling ahead. Collins's timing is impeccable, his soulfulness absolute, and this fine early-'80s live date is the next best thing to having seen him in person.

Queen Innuendo CD  (1991)

Dylan CD music
CD $11.99  4.1 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
INNUENDO would turn out to be Queen's swan song, as it was the last album released during vocalist Freddie Mercury's lifetime--he passed away several months after the album's release. Expanding on the successful back-to-basics sound of 1989's THE MIRACLE, INNUENDO was another solid outing. And like it's predecessor, it contains several tracks with lyrics that are clearly autobiographical for the band and especially Mercury, particularly "These Are the Days of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On," which deal with the topic of mortality. Not all of INNUENDO deals with serious topics, however--"I'm Going Slightly Mad" and "Delilah" both contain humorous lyrics and were designed to be taken lightheartedly. The epic title track, which opens the album, is an instant Queen classic on first listen, built similarly in structure to past Queen classics "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Somebody to Love." A pair of wonderful hard rockers, "The Hitman" and "Headlong" can be found on INNUENDO, as can a couple of lush ballads--"Don't Try So Hard" and "Bijou." Looking back, Queen went out on a definite high note with INNUENDO. Recorded at Metropolis Studios, London, England and Mountain Studios, Montreaux, Switzerland. Personnel: Brian May (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboards); Steve Howe (guitar); Mike Moran (Spanish guitar, keyboards); David Richards (programming). Recording information: metropolis Studios, London, England. Photographers: Simon Fowler; Steve Howe. Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboards); Brian May (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Roger Taylor (vocals, keyboards, drums, percussion); John Deacon (bass, keyboards).

After scoring its biggest hit ever with its eighth release, 1983's polished ELIMINATOR, ZZ Top decided to continue in the same mainstream direction for its next release two years later, AFTERBURNER. Another big hit for the band, the album did spawn several hits, yet wasn't as strong overall as its predecessor. It was impossible to avoid the following ZZ hits on either MTV or radio between 1985-'86--the ballad "Rough Boy" (which innovative video was based on AFTERBURNER's space-age cover art), the synth stomper "Velcro Fly," the melodic "Sleeping Bag," or the rocking "Stages." 15 years after the band's debut release, AFTERBURNER found ZZ Top more popular than ever. 1985 album from Warner Brothers. ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass guitar); Frank Beard (drums).

Scarlett Johansson Break Up CD  (2009)

Dylan songs
CD $11.45  Top 500 Audio Samples
Pete Yorn recorded BREAK UPin 2006 on the heels of one, but it sat on the shelf until 2009, appearing just a matter of months after BACK & FORTH, and a year after his duet partner, Scarlett Johannson, cast as Brigitte Bardot to Yorn's Serge Gainsbourg, made an awkwardly arty splash with a Tom Waits covers album, but the album that really casts a shadow over this is VOL. 1, the 2008 record by She & Him, the teaming of M. Ward and indie actress Zooey Deschanel. Yorn and Johannson cut their album long before She & Him, but surfacing in its wake, they can't help but seem a bit like the polished, polite answer to the twee, precious charms of Zooey & M. Ward. BREAK UP does trump VOL. 1 conceptually, chronicling the dissolution of a romance as a series of duets, and Scarlett is a more-than-worthy foil to Yorn. Includes eight original compositions by Pete/Scarlett in the spirit of Serge Gainsbourg's recording with Brigitte Bardot. The album re-enacts the tempestuous course of a love affair on the rocks. Featuring an interpretation of the art-rock classic 'I Am the Cosmos' by the late Chris Bell co-founder of Big Star. 'Break Up' is Johansson's 2nd release with Atco, following her debut, 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'. The album had its genesis in the aftermath of a breakup in 2006. After Yorn was unable to sleep for a week, he finally dozed off, only to wake with a start just minutes later. What had awakened him was a dream. "I sat up in bed, and the whole thing was in my head, fully formed," Yorn says, sounding as if he still doesn't quite believe it. "I suddenly felt like I really needed to make a record in the style of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. Not that it had to sound like that, but it had to be a guy-and-girl conceptual thing. So then I asked myself, 'Who's Brigitte Bardot today? It's Scarlett Johansson.'" Yorn gave Johansson a call. Intrigued by his out-of-the-blue invitation, she decided to go for it. "Pete told me that he'd had a dream that we recorded an
Extemporaneous
Brute Force Extemporaneous CD  (1971) (Import) United Kingdom

Dylan album
CD $16.19
EXTEMPORANEOUS is 21-song collection from songwriter/actor/stuntman/stand-up comedian Brute Force, who wrote hits for such acts Del Shannon, the CHiffons, and the Cyrkle. This U.K. edition includes five bonus tracks, including the rare Apple Records single "King of Fuh"/"No One Knows What's Going on in My Head." Achieving cult status is rarely an artist's initial goal, but in the case of Brute Force, born Stephen Friedland, it was inevitable. As the composer of the controversial oddity "King of Fuh" -- "in this land there was a king/and everybody called him the 'Fuh' king" -- a track that was championed by George Harrison and is officially the rarest single on the Beatles' Apple label, as well as the writer of hits for the Chiffons, Del Shannon, the Creation, and the Tokens -- he was a member of the latter -- the artist was by no means a stranger to the business. After debuting with the heavily arranged and orchestrated Confections of Love, Brute decided to cut the record that would cement him in the obscuro genre forever. The aptly titled Extemporaneous, recorded live in the studio with minimal piano accompaniment before a very small and enthusiastic audience, is an eccentric, meandering, and whimsically banal collection of comedy, folk, and improvisation that aims for profundity but ends up hitting novelty square in the jaw. Though he lacks William Shatner's bombast and agreeable narcissism, Brute's overwhelming sincerity is the only reason anything on the album works. With each burst of uncontrollable laughter at such generic double-entendres as "Uranus," Brute's excitement escalates, rushing from one topic to the next with lunatic zeal -- there is an element of narcotic giddiness to the audience's frequent and explosive giggles, like they just wandered in off of the street unaware, discovered it was happy hour, and politely stayed through to the end. Like Shel Silverstein, he peppers his stories, songs, and poems with mystical wit, the occasional political jab, and a whole lot of thinly veiled sexual innuendo -- this is the late '60s -- but lacks the poet's mischievous forked tongue and utopian prescience. Brute has a reputation for on-stage physicality, and there are moments here where the audience must be taking in a spectacle that listeners can only imagine, as there is nary a moment of quiet observation, but for the most part the whole affair is nearly impossible to connect with. Popular culture loves its jesters and Brute Force is more than happy to wear the funny hat, but the immediate experience provided by Extemporaneous is one of uncomfortable fidgeting -- not unlike listening to a Neil Hamburger stand-up routine -- and its success depends entirely on the listener's sense of the absurd and overall artistic stamina. [In 2004, Rev-Ola reissued Extemporaneous with exhaustive liner notes from writer Steve Stanley and Brute himself, as well as five bonus tracks, including the singles "World...," "Tapeworm of Love," "Vicky," "Nobody Knows What's Goin' On in My Mind but Me," and the legendary "King of Fuh."] ~ James Christopher Monger One of the world's major eccentric talents..a stuntman, an actor, a stand-up improv master...who also happened to write hit songs for The Chiffons, Del Shannon, The Cyrkle, The Creation and The Tokens. The disc also includes one of the rarest collector's items: both sides of the single "King Of Fuh"/"No One Knows What's Going On In My Head" from The Beatles' Apple Records label! An absolute must for Beatle completists!
Greendale
Neil Young Greendale Vinyl LP  (2003) Box Set

Dylan CD music
Vinyl Record $57.09
Includes a bonus DVD entitled LIVE AT VICAR STREET, which features a solo acoustic concert recording of the GREENDALE album. GREENDALE 2ND EDITION includes a different DVD and different artwork from the original GREENDALE. This release includes a bonus DVD entitled INSIDE GREENDALE, which contains behind-the-scenes footage of the GREENDALE recording session. Critics were sharply divided over this album, some hailing it as a masterpiece and some dismissing it as a tossed-off trifle. Longtime Young fans will notice right away that GREENDALE's raw, minimalistic sound and quirky songs hearken back to such gloriously off-kilter 1970s releases as ZUMA and TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. This is a "concept album," but it's one of the few instances in rock history where those words needn't send audiences fleeing in the opposite direction. Young's rare combination of deceptively effortless, organic narrative and unpredictable strangeness keep things flowing, and there are valuable moments of humor sprinkled throughout to keep GREENDALE from getting weighed down. Crazy Horse guitarist Poncho Sampedro is absent, leaving Young backed only by the primal thump of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, but a number of the tunes stretch out to 10 minutes or more, forcing you to confront the transcendentally ragged simplicity and eloquence of Young's guitar and musical vision. Ultimately, the effect is not unlike that of latter-day Bob Dylan or Lou Reed--a veteran rock poet fully immersed in his idiom pushes its boundaries to meet his idiosyncratic needs, simultaneously confounding expectations and leaving deep footprints in the landscape of modern musical art. Critics were sharply divided over this album, some hailing it as a masterpiece and some dismissing it as a tossed-off trifle. JoySlam Heat Moon CD  (2005)

Dylan music CDs
CD $7.49
Out of the ashes of the band “Atomic Fantasy”, the Solo project known as Joyslam was forged. Vocalist/Keyboardist RJ Martine ventured out to create a unique Funk/Rock sound, an integration of various musical styles including Ska, Latin, Jazz and Reggae. HEAT MOON is a 6 SONG EP featuring a fun and funky version of ‘Do It’ – a new and innovative slant on the song originally performed by 70’s legendary BT Express. In one of her most recent articles, Katherine Davenport of Static Ground magazine stated “This was one of the best covers I’ve come across this year!” On the other side of the spectrum is ‘Understand’, a ballad with a Joyslam flair showcasing powerful yet sorrowful lyrics. While ‘Time is Reality’ offers a Surf Guitar splash with an all-out hot Reggae dance groove. According to Poplife magazine, “Time is Reality is the best example of a hybrid of Sean Paul and Jamiroquai for this new Millennium.” Joyslam's Music is now receiving Airplay on College Radio, Satellite Radio, and Multi Music Hott Roxx cd's, the Industry standard for Professional DJ CD's. Digitally,Joyslam's Music is available through Apple ITunes, Sony Connects, Napster, AOL Rhapsody and several other notable companies. Laying down a solid foundation with the rare and unique ability to balance both technicality and feel. Rounded out by the guitars pumping a uniquely fluid and diverse sound with an uncompromising precision. Murray Pollard, of Murray Pollard Entertainment said of one of Joyslam’s most recent shows ~“An Excellent show as always! A Great time was had by all!” Through the success of College Radio the band has played several College & University Campuses including alma mater Humber College, University of Toronto, University of Guelph and proudly play the Kick Off for Niagara College's Spring Break!!As a result Joyslam has played several major Festivals including Toronto's prestigious Festival of Beer, Fort Erie's Friendship & Sunsplash Festivals, the Come Together Festival and several Canada Day Festivals.Through a diverse balance of styles, this “Fresh look and sound” (a quote from John Ferri of New York’s premier promotions company MPX 2000) is ready to reach a new millennium. Summing it up best is Rob Zero of Anti-Zero magazine who said: “Who the hell is Joyslam..? Re-Up
Comadose Re-Up CD  (2001)

Dylan album
CD $13.09  Audio Samples
Hailing from the Northeast, Comadose hope to find their place among the current horde of rap-metal groups. Comadose carry with them a thick hardcore sound that helps distance the band from more radio-friendly rapcore acts such as Limp Bizkit, yet this hardcore element also leaves the album feeling a bit unrefined. This being the band's first album, all the members show hesitation and awkward uneasiness with the songs they're playing. Comadose have two guitarists, yet listening to Re-Up there seems to be no real need for the additional blast of sound, as one musician could easily handle most of the responsibility. Michael Roberge has an unusual voice, but tends to resort to throaty screams rather than display his more interesting vocal aspects. Lyrically, Re-Up is lacking substance, but the band manages to make solid songs with what they have at their disposal. "Velcro" and "Slam Pig" are arguably the best of the batch, but Comadose really need to work on their overall presentation. Re-Up is a solid debut, but leaves plenty of room for the band to grow, because if not, Comadose have a very long road ahead of them. ~ Jason D. Taylor Recorded at Mayhem Productions, Manchester, New Hampshire. Comadose: Michael Roberge (vocals); Thomas Ackroyd, Jack Worster (guitar); Jesse L.
