For Pete's Sake album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead ...

| | Patty Loveless Mountain Soul II CD (2009)
For Pete's Sake songs
$14.55 Patty Loveless' MOUNTAIN SOUL II is not a strict sequel to its 2001 predecessor. Whereas the former album was chock-full of bluegrass tunes both historical and contemporary, the sequel is a far more diverse collection that includes traditional songs, country music classics, and some new originals--and yes, there are a couple of bluegrass tunes in the mix. Loveless and her husband, producer Emory Gordy, Jr., recruited a stellar cast of players and backing vocalists, and wrote some stellar tunes to put alongside hallmark favorites on this mostly acoustic date. The guests ...

| | Living Out Loud CD (1998) Original Soundtrack
For Pete's Sake music CDs
$8.49 You may not have caught this 1998 film, which starred Holly Hunter, Danny DeVito, Queen Latifah and Martin Donovan, but a number of the songs performed on this soundtrack will certainly be familiar--as are the performers. Dean Martin, Etta James and Mel Torme are all featured with vintage recordings, while rapper/actress Queen Latifah shows her range when she takes a shot at singing jazz.
Latifah gives the notoriously difficult-to-sing jazz standard "Lush Life" a decent reading, winningly essays a laid-back reading of "Goin' Out of My Head" and lays down an engagingly sweet version of Irving Gordon's "Be Anything (But Be Mine)." Perhaps most suprising of all is the decision to hand the mic to the ...
| | John Martyn Classics CDs (2002) Import
For Pete's Sake songs
$14.29 Any longtime John Martyn fan can look at the track listing of this two-CD set and agree that yes, most of these songs are John Martyn classics. But for those who loved him in his '70s period, when there was a wonderful rolling edge to his music by his mixing of folk with jazz, that's as far as the approval will extend. The songs might be great, but these performances of them definitely aren't classics. They come from the late '80s and '90s (many from the No Little Boy and Couldn't Love You More sessions) when he revisited his older material with a new band, and decided to place it all firmly in the middle of the road. It's not terrible -- the playing is good, and the songs still have class -- but it's enough to make any hardcore fan cry and wonder whatever happened to Martyn. Even the presence of Levon Helm on a version of Utah ...
