This is the year 2022. Overcrowding, pollution, and resource depletion have reduced society's leaders to finding food for the teeming masses. The answer is Soylent Green - an artificial nourishment whose actual ingredients are not known by the public. Thorn is the tough homicide detective who stumbles onto the secret so terrifying no one would dare believe him. Director: Richard Fleischer; actors: Edward Robinson, Charlton Heston, Joseph Cotton, Leigh Taylor-Young, Paula Kelly, Chuck Connors, Brock Peters, Stephen Young. A nightmarish vision of the future set in New York City circa the year 2022. The population has swelled to 40 million and the environment is so ravaged by pollution that a synthetic food known as Soylent Green is the only kind available. When the director of the giant corporation that manufactures this food supply is murdered, the detective investigating the case gradually discovers the horrifying truth about Soylent Green's secret ingredient. 21st century New York City is (still) an overpopulated mess, and the only food left is Soylent Green, a soybean and lentil concoction with an extra-special, government-mandated ingredient. As police detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) investigates a murder, he learns of a conspiracy with bizarre implications. This Edward G. Robinson's final movie, as the star died not long after filming his final scene. Based on Harry Harrison's "Make Room! Make Room!" Theatrical Release: April 19, 1973. Soylent Green Reviews: "...SOYLENT stands up remarkably well, largely due to Richard Fleishcer's suitably stark direction..."

Glad I finally got it I saw it almost 30years ago along with THX1138 I purchased. Now that I understand English way better than back then I really enjoyed it. Very pessimistic view, but still well made. Seems classical music is the only thing ever-lasting. I like it. Submitted by h.kondo (Palm Harbor,FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wow. Unbelievable...! Have a seat before you read this. In the 1960's there was a movement called zero population growth based on scientific projections that by the year 2060, the demand for food and natural resources would far exceed the supply; the world's overpopulation would collapse the earth's ecosystem. This accelerated growth has caused pollution not only to trigger global warming, but also to raise ocean temperatures, combined with pollutants, enough to kill off coral, and systematically, up the food chain, wiping out sealife. Major food shortages. Over population combined with the politics, greed and corruption of money supply and inflation manipulations have bled out the middle class. Massive unemployment and homelessness. Price of fuel gets to be so expensive that people begin using their cars as homes. The only few jobs available are in law enforcement or government. Cities are spilt into two sections; one for the wealthy elitists who no longer share power with others and are now in complete control, and the other section, for the worthless masses. A corporate giant called Soylent has to get creative to mitigate the food shortage issue. The moral of the story is akin to others like Farenheit 451, THX1134, Loagans Run, 1984, Zardoz, and George Orwell's book Animal Farm. Must see. This movie was way ahead of its time and predicts unbelivably "familiar" events happening today. Five stars! Submitted by Charles (Redondo Beach, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.39 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach ...

Soylent Green film
$21.19 Winner of nine David di Donatello Awards among numerous other international prizes, BREAD AND TULIPS is a charming romantic comedy from director Silvio Soldini. Licia Maglietta is simply magnificent as Rosalba, a fortyish married woman who is abandoned at a rest stop during a family bus trip. Suddenly feeling that something is missing from her life, she hitches her way toward Venice, calling her husband--bathroom fixture salesman, Mimmo--only occasionally to tell him that she is taking her own short vacation and that he will have to take care of the house and their two teenage sons. But a day or so stretches into a longer period of time as Rosalba finds herself making a new group of friends, getting a job, and beginning to care for an oddly appealing--and suicidal--waiter. The great Bruno Ganz is terrific as the fatalistic Icelandic waiter who speaks softly and carefully, stringing together multisyllabic, ...
