New Remastered & Released!!After we performed a successful series of gigs together, entitled "Jazz Edge on Saturday", the recording of a CD seemed to be the logical next step for us. I was amazed by the excellent interpretation of my music in exactly the way I imagined it to be played by Ull an Thomas. It added to the big pleasure of this recording session. My deep appreciation goes to these two great musicians and true friends in Stuttgart. I sincerely hope we will enjoy many more performances together. "El sol sale" -'a sunrise' can inspire many things. When watching the sun rise, one is reminded of the daily renewal of hope for better times. New possible paths to follow may come to mind, which can help us understand and enjoy the true meaning of life, without forgetting where we come from and who we are. There will always be some difficult moments in life or new things to learn, but there will also always be special moments when the sun is shining on us. Remembering this can enlighten our souls, our people, our countries and our futures. It's about time! Thank you for listening. Daniel Messina „The Sun Is Rising' - a most appropriate title for Daniel Messina's latest production. An exceptionally positive and relaxed mood was created on this recording of 11 delightfully melodious Messina compositions. Messina once again proves himself to be not only a very accomplished drummer and percussionist, but also an imaginative composer and arranger. The mutual compatibility of the trio, completed by Ull Möck and Thomas Rotter, is strongly in evidence and Daniel Messina's music is performed with taste and great sensitivity. His melodies are most appealing to the ear and really touch the soul and his drumming is precise and controlled. This is a CD with 76 minutes of music which invites repeated listening. Siempre Salsa is an upbeat collection of songs in a variety of settings, all of which have in common the spirit of salsa. The eight songs on the CD were all composed by trombonist Rick Davies and range from straight-up Bronx-style salsa dura to big-band and small-group Latin jazz. Wayne Gorbea and Salsa Picante are featured on the two mainstream salsa cuts, "Rosa Primavera" and "Habana Nocturna." Frank Otero offers his provocative vocals on both tracks. The remaining selections are Latin jazz and feature the Jazzismo Sextet joined by various New York- and Vermont-based musicians including the members of Salsa Picante. Culled from the big-band archives, both "Insomnio" and "Santos" bring back memories of the Palladium-era tradition of Machito and Tito Puente. "Santos" is a tribute to the great arranger Ray Santos. "Rumba Nortena" and "Caliente Time" feature the core members of the Jazzismo Sextet while guest alto saxophonist David Grippo shines on "Cena Para Seis" and "Calle Loca." Rick Davies uses many of the same techniques heard on his first CD, Salsa Strut, offering listeners a danceable, emotional set. However, with the additional swing and big-band arrangements for Siempre Salsa, Davies brings the Latin side of his trombone finesse to the forefront with more swing, more style, and more sass. ~ Paula Edelstein
