Nappy Brown was an R&B star in the 1950s, but he dropped below the radar for many years, making a brief comeback in the `80s. He re-emerged once more in time for what would be his swan song, 2007's aptly titled LONG TIME COMING. Its mix of classic R&B, jump blues, and Chicago sounds, energized by Brown's surprisingly youthful-sounding voice, ensured that Brown, who died in 2008, went out on a high note.

Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[He] applies his very respectable vocal chops to a well-chosen setlist of mostly straightforward but not over-familiar blues." Nappy Brown Long Time Coming Songs Long Time Coming Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Thrilling. Nappy Brown sounds spectacular for a man of any age. To learn that he's 79 is stunning. His voice, delivery, and original songs are excellent. In addition, the variety of songs, and the quality of the backing rhythm section elevates this album far beyond most modern blues releases. The many superlative reviews this album's received from major publications and reviewers aren't kidding: they don't make 'em like this anymore. Shouting and Pleading the Blues Nappy’s back, baby, and this is very much a mixed bag. Brown started his career in the 1950s as a big city blues shout in the tradition of Roy Brown and Joe Turner. Unlike Roy Brown and Turner though, this Brown was very heavily influenced by gospel music. His biggest claim to fame was writing and recording the original “Night Time Is the Right Time,” recycled here. Brown’s classic recordings featured great New York horn sections and the phenomenal guitar of Mickey Baker. For this reason, it takes some time getting used to Brown singing with a more Chicago blues accompaniment and occasional heavy handed guitar.
Half the material here was previously recorded by Brown decades ago, so nobody’s really taking many chances. Of the newer material “Aw Shucks Baby” and “Every Shut Eye Ain’t Sleepin’” stand out. One dud here though is the acoustic treatment of “Cherry Red,” which really drags. That aside, it’s good to hear Brown shout and plead the blues again.

| | Mississippi Heat One Eye Open: Live At Rosa's Lounge, Chicago CD (2005)
Long Time Coming CD music
$12.45 Mississippi Heat is an entertaining and versatile blues combo headed by harmonica player Pierre Lacocque. Whether playing lowdown blues, occasional instrumentals, blues ballads, or more R&B-ish material, Mississippi Heat is full of fire and passion. In addition to Lacocque (who wrote five of the songs on this set), the band features a fine female singer in Inetta Visor, an intense guitarist in Max Valldeneu, and a fine rhythm section propelled by organist-keyboardist Chris Cameron. On this particular live outing, Lurrie Bell makes guest appearances on guitar and takes two excellent vocals. Chicago blues fans will definitely want to be made aware of both Mississippi Heat and this highly enjoyable CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Long Time Coming CD music
$13.25 The Jimmy Reed Highway is a well-traveled thoroughfare as storied and rich in legend throughout the southern United States as Robert Johnson's mythical Crossroads. It runs through the minds of men and women of a certain age, complexion, and place who grew up during the era of segregation and who defied their parents, the law, and all genteel propriety and custom by answering one bluesman's invitation to cross the color line and join him getting lowdown and dirty as he serenaded a generation from the bandstand, on jukeboxes, and through the radio.
