The Stockholm trio of Peter Moren, Bjorn Yttling, and John Eriksson scored a European hit with their delightfully amateurish "Young Folks" single, included here complete with whistling and bongos. The rest of their second album, a fully realized fusion of intelligent songwriting and innovative production, is equally enchanting. Moren's "Objects Of My Affection" combines the rhythm, soul, and self-analysis of a RUBBER SOUL-era John Lennon composition with the atmosphere and melodic distortion of My Bloody Valentine, and Eriksson's "Up Against The Wall" evokes Blur's early Syd Barrett-influenced songs.

It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Division Day offers up an album that is often complex, occasionally tense, but always experimental and adventurous with Beartrap Island. The group wastes no time in creating and exploring a variety of soundscapes that range from delicate and ethereal to dark and threatening. A fine example of the latter is the album's second track, "Ricky," in which lead vocalist and keyboardist Rohner Segnitz uses rapid-fire effects to create an aura of depth and menace; it's a nightmarish chase of a song that seems almost out of place among Beartrap Island's otherwise dreamy tracks. In fact, "Ricky" is enough of an acquired taste that it could chase off those unwilling to see the album through to the end. Once through the storm, however, listeners will be rewarded with songs that are thoughtful and relaxing while also being engaging. Beartrap Island mellows, but it doesn't necessarily slow down. The four members of Division Day are a fine ensemble, working together to ensure that the album's spell isn't broken by out of place riffs or hubris-driven, experimental showboating.
