Bantock succeeded Sir Edward Elgar at Birmingham University in 1908. During his time there he developed an interest in large-scale choral composition, producing among other works, his choral masterpiece 'Omar Khayyam.' In addition to three soloists and large chorus, Bantock involves a large orchestra with two full string complements, arranged to the left and right of the conductor. In an atmospheric caravan scene Bantock also makes use of authentic camel bells.
Finally... At long last the opportunity to appreciate this long neglected masterpiece. The compositions of Granville Bantock are much underated. This full blooded performance is currently the only one we have so no comparisons can yet be made. However this performance is most satisfactory and will bring great pleasure to those that will listen with open ears.
