Bantock succeeded Sir Edward Elgar at Birmingham University in 1908. During his time there he developed an interest in large-scale choral composition, producing among other works, his choral masterpiece 'Omar Khayyam.' In addition to three soloists and large chorus, Bantock involves a large orchestra with two full string complements, arranged to the left and right of the conductor. In an atmospheric caravan scene Bantock also makes use of authentic camel bells.

$29.29 | | Youssou N'Dour Eyes Open CD (1992)
Smetana: Orchestral Works, Vol. 1
$9.39 Senegal native Youssou N'Dour is one of the most recognized figures on the world-music stage. EYES OPEN, the singer's first album for Spike Lee's 40 Acres & A Mule record label, garnered N'Dour a Grammy nomination, and further enhanced his reputation. N'Dour's mellifluous tenor sounds superb here, and the musical melange of the record continues the artist's fusion of native African rhythms and melodies with Caribbean, jazz, and pop styles. N'Dour's lyrics address everything from media ("Things Unspoken"), military ("Useless Weapons"), unwanted childbirth ("Couple's Choice"), and the difficulties of African identity ("Country Boy"). The musical palette of EYES OPEN is quite broad, and while there is a lessened presence of traditional African elements (which are still prominent, but are blended artfully into the mix), those intrigued by N'Dour's attempt to create a new global pop will find much to appreciate here.
Recorded at Xippi Studios, Dakar, Senegal in October 1991.
Personnel: Youssou N'Dour (vocals); Lamine Faye (acoustic guitar); Mamadou "Jimi" Mbaye, Pape Oumar Ngom (guitar); Thierno Koite (alto & soprano saxophones); Issa Cissocko, Charlie Lagond (tenor saxophone); Ken Fradley (trumpet); Lee Robertson (trombone); Ibrahima Cisse, Jean-Phillipe Rykiel (keyboards); Habib Faye (bass, keyboards); Fallilou "Gallas" Niang (drums); Assane Thiam (Senegalese talking drum); Babacar "Mbaye Dieye" Faye (Senegalese percussion, background vocals); Billy Congoma, The Sandial Assiko Band (percussion); Ousseynou Ndiaye (background vocals).
