(2 Customer Reviews)
Ex-Libertines Pete Doherty and his band Babyshambles offered up their second full-length with SHOTTER'S NATION. For a band that's been dissolving since practically its inception, thanks to Doherty's problems with drugs and the law, Babyshambles make a remarkably good showing on their sophomore effort, turning in a batch of punky Britpop that gives equal allegiance to punch and hooks.
Tunes like "Carry On Up the Morning," "Delivery," and "Baddie's Boogie" show Doherty still has no shortage of rock-&-roll spirit in him, while "The Lost Art of Murder," which features an appearance by folk hero Burt Jansch, adds a touch of melancholy. Overall, the album provides a great rock romp that will please fans of Doherty and the Libertines.
A broad range of influences shine through on this album, from the Kinks, through to punk, Stone Roses, a touch of Soul 2 Soul, 80s' indie, Madness, Blondie, Motown, Britpop and even one inspired by their UK number four hit single 'Fuck Forever'. Lyrically, the album captures the many facets of Peter's character: storyteller, lyricist, street poet, hopeless romantic and chronicler of British life. From capturing the feeling at sunrise after a night on the tiles, to delving into a self-destructive 20 year marriage ('Baddie's Boogie') this is an album of rare emotional breadth. The album even manages to immortalise Peter's doodle invention (and 'Down In Albion' cover star) French Dog in one of the album's highlights 'French Dog Blues' All songs are written by Peter Doherty, with contributions from Mick, Adam and the band. On 'Unbilotitled', Peter's old mucker Wolfman wrote some of the lyrics (the pair penned a top ten single in 2004 with 'For Lovers'). EMI. 2007.
Babyshambles: Michael Whitnall, Peter Doherty (vocals, guitars); Adam Ficek (vocals, keyboards, drums, percussion); Drew McConnell (vocals, double bass, bass guitar).
Additional personnel: Stephen Street, Bert Jansch (guitar); Stephen Large (keyboards).
Rolling Stone (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[Doherty] sounds lighthearted, strumming through an assortment of Clash-and-Kinks-style hooks." Spin (p.117) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T[he disc contains some of Doherty's most coherent tunes yet, including 'Baddie's Boogie,' a thoughtfully observed domestic drama..." Shotter's Nation album
$8.29 All songs written by Peter Townshend except "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" (Peter Townshend/Roger Daltrey).
This rare collection features 14 classics from the Who's early days, recorded from 1965 to 1969.
Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy has the distinction of being the first in a long line of Who compilations. It also has the distinction of being the best. Part of the reason why it is so successful is that it has an actual purpose. Meaty was designed as a collection of the group's singles, many of which never appeared on albums. The Who recorded their share of great albums during the '60s, but condensing their highlights to just the singles is an electrifying experience. "The Kids Are Alright" follows "I Can't Explain," "I Can See for Miles" bleeds into "Pictures of Lily" and "My Generation," "Magic Bus" gives way to "Substitute" and "I'm a Boy" -- it's ...
| | Ramones Rocket To Russia CD (1977) Deluxe Edition
Shotter's Nation CD music
$7.09 Principally recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Legs McNeil and Arturo Vega.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep).
The third of the Ramones' original quartet of albums, 1977's ROCKET TO RUSSIA is actually a big improvement over the slightly disappointing LEAVE HOME, released earlier in 1977. While not as solidly perfect as RAMONES, ROCKET TO RUSSIA contains very little fat and boasts possibly the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, "Rockaway Beach" and the immortal "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." "We're a Happy Family" and "Teenage Lobotomy" are only slightly lesser tracks, and the covers of the Trashmen's gloriously silly "Surfin' Bird" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" are conceptually perfect, linking the Ramones neatly ...
| | Only Ones Darkness & Light: The Complete BBC Recordings CDs (2002)
Shotter's Nation music CDs
$23.19 This two-CD set brings together all five of the band's 1977-1980 sessions for BBC radio, as well as a couple of late-'70s TV appearances on the BBC television show Old Grey Whistle Test (which are as good fidelity-wise as the radio broadcasts). Most of the material comes from their three albums, although there are a few items here and there that only showed up elsewhere in places like the Remains compilation or the Peel Sessions release. This concentration of multiple sessions over a short period of time does mean you get two versions of a few songs (including the celebrated "Another Girl Another Planet") and three of "The Beast," in fact, but they're intelligently widely spaced ...

| | Bob Dylan Blonde On Blonde CD (1966) Reissue; Remastered
Shotter's Nation album
$9.35 Only a year after HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, Dylan miraculously topped himself with further epigrams of surrealistic poetry and emotional intrigue. The pressure of a punishing touring schedule and high public profile helped drive him to an unbelievable fit of creativity as he spontaneously scribbled these gems in his hotel rooms. We were spoiled with a double album, more Dylan music than we had previously heard, yet still destined to endure. BLONDE ON BLONDE surrounds the folk-rock bard with the likes of Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson, Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey, all seasoned musicians giving this album a relaxed confidence quite unlike the youthful energy of HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED. Decades later this album still rewards and surprises. A gigantic record in every sense.
If Highway 61 Revisited played as ...

Shotter's Nation album
$18.99 Singer/songwriter Zlati Krycer has been singing all her life either out loud or in her mind. Known to unconsciously chew or write in beat to the music, Zlati always lived life through melody and rhythm. Composing songs became her way of processing the world. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY in a family of musicians, Zlati's musical career began as a vocalist, performing in various choirs as a soprano. Playing piano throughout the early years, she began to learn guitar to accompany herself as a solo singer. A natural songwriter from the start, Zlati has been accumulating experiences, having lived in Australia and various cities in the US. Being also a wife and mother, combined with her journey toward authentic Torah ...
