$5.99 Not the great, late '70s San Francisco punk band, this new, young Detroit trio are OK heirs to the moniker -- even if their brand of punk is the poppy type found occasionally in the charts, rather than the classic Social D-like '77 sound. But for whatever resemblance they have to the sort of groups that ultimately bore me, like Green Day or Sum 41, the new N.A. have a lot more heart-felt prodding than either, more in that stronger Descendents/All or Pointed Sticks kind of likability. It's that real pop sense to their punk, plus sharp playing, that makes them good. It's little things, too, like the "ahhhhhhh" backing vocals on "Reflection" and the bouncier rhythms of the keyboard-enhanced "Tonight," or the six-eight waltz-timed "One Last Chance." Likewise the soaring hook of "Playing With Fire." And though they dress like typical hardcore toughs without a brain between them, the sweet-boy caring lyrics written and sung by Colin Mattson totally belies that -- proof again that it's wrong to judge books by their sartorial covers. Hey, he's the sort of caring, thoughtful punk rock kid you'd want your punk rock daughter to date, assuming you were a punk rock parent! ~ Jack Rabid
No Alternative is a pop/punk/rock band from suburban Detroit. Formed in 1996 and formerly known as "The Milkmen" they have played at a variety of venues in the metro area and regionally. Some of their most notable live performances include the legendary CBGBs in NYC, NEMO 2002 in Boston, MOBfest 2K2 in Chicago, The Annual Detroit Punkfest and a spot on the Ernie Ball stage of the 2000 Vans Warped Tour. As part of the Warped Tour, they were entered into a contest based on the online voting of fans who attended. Out of the 300+ bands entered, No Alternative finished in the top 20. They were invited back for the 2002 Warped Tour's final show in Detroit. They have been featured in The Detroit News, Real Detroit, Rollor Magazine and others. In 2001, No Alternative released their debut CD "Now or Never" on Static Records. Recorded at White Room studio (Kid Rock "Devil Without A Cause", etc.) and produced by John Smerek, "Now or Never" is the result of more than 5 years of songwriting. The CD received airplay on several local radio stations including Detroit/Windsor commercial station 89X CIMX FM. MTV's "Road Rules" selected a song from the CD to play on the show. The band recently received a nomination for "Best Alternative Act" in the 2003 Detroit Music Awards. No Alternative is: Colin Mattson-guitar/vocals-Max Krentz-bass----Tom Tesnow-drums Reviews: "No Alternative has a pop-punk aesthetic with a deep down spirit"-Erik Kluiber, The Michigander"Finally! angst that one doesn't get tired of hearing." -Omar Perez, alternative.com"It's that real pop sense to their punk, plus sharp playing, that makes them good."- Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover"This CD features pop punk (ala Green Day) ...

$18.55 "This band have the magic touch - shimmy, shimmer, toneburst, humour, pathos, instrumental breaks to die for." - DrownedInSound.com"An eclectic, unique disc. While its mixed focus may be off-putting to closed-minded listeners, those willing to give something fresh and new a chance might be pleasantly surprised." - IndieVille.com"Give this blighter time (I’m on my 4th listen today) and it’ll reveal itself slowly as a full bright-blooming work of subtle invention and tasty surprises.... Clearly, this pony has several tricks up its sleeve." - Vanity Project fanzineArt Wave From IlkestonJohnny Domino's "Solid Ground" is their fourth album of angular, literate, funky pop music in five years. Now that the mainstream music press is finally tuning in to these sounds and calling it "Art Wave" this could be the moment for the Midlands band to take their rightful place in the hearts of music fans.James Convery, Marc Elston and brothers Stephen and Giles Woodward spent 18 months holed up in their own studio in Ilkeston, in deepest Derbyshire, creating these 14 tracks which vary from the "sharp and driven, post-rock pop" (Vanity Project fanzine) of the title track to the "sea shanty-isms" of "I Heart 1883" and the "Joy Division meets Mario Bros electro" (Robots and Electronic Brains) of "Vocodamol". They've been influenced by the esoteric side of rock, including such bands as Can, Meat Puppets and Devo, but their ...

$25.89 Initially renowned as Bob Dylan's backing group, the Band emerged from the singer's shadow to proclaim a distinctive talent. Drawing upon a musical canon embracing soul, country, folk and rock `n' roll, the quintet created a unique sound that was quintessentially American. Its rustic qualities were enhanced by principle songwriter Robbie Robertson who created vistas suggestive of a pre-industrial age, and as such, captured the restlessness of the late 60s without the need for explicit manifestos. Expressive singing, sublime melodies and telepathic musicianship instils The Band with quality, but its adult themes and perspectives ensure an absolute timelessness. An all-time critics' favourite.
The Band's first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group's second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, partially because the players had become a more cohesive unit, and partially because guitarist Robbie Robertson had taken over the songwriting, writing or co-writing all 12 songs. Though a Canadian, Robertson focused on a series of American archetypes from the union worker in "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" and the retired sailor in "Rockin' Chair" to, most famously, the Confederate Civil War observer Virgil Cane in "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The album effectively mixed the kind of mournful songs that had dominated ...
