Cafe Tacuba's album SINO is a unique album in the Mexico City band's evolution. The contemplative "Seguir Siendo" might lead one to believe that they've lost their playful, classic Tacuba touch. However, songs like "53100" and "Volver A Comenzar" still infuse their rock sound with psychedelic, synthesized beats reminiscent of the '80s. And with its homages to the Sex Pistols and the Argentinean duo Sui Generis, SINO begins to veer away from Tabuca's practice of integrating native Mexican influences heard on earlier albums. This release truly establishes Cafe Tacuba as a band that successfully bends all genres, continuing to create an original sound.

After making the strongest and most consistent album of his career with 1981's Escape Artist, Garland Jeffreys seemed poised to finally make a genuine commercial breakthrough, and with Bob Clearmountain back in the producer's chair, he recorded Guts for Love in 1983, a polished and accessible set of songs about the joys and challenges of grown-up romance. However, while "polished and accessible" is doubtless what Jeffreys and Clearmountain were aiming for, there's little arguing that they got more of it than they really wanted. Dominated by slick dance grooves and keyboards, Guts for Love tries so hard to be radio friendly that it unwittingly became the most faceless album of Jeffreys' career, and as hard as he tries to push some passion into the songs with his vocals, the surfaces of the production are so clean and shiny that nothing sticks to them. It doesn't help that Guts for Love isn't one of Jeffreys' more memorable collections of songs; he can write with intelligence and force about how difficult and rewarding love can be, and he delivers a few top-shelf numbers on the subject with "Fidelity," "Surrender," and the title tune, but there are a few facile throwaways such as "Dance Up," "Shout," and "Rebel Love" (an especially weak reggae offering which you wouldn't expect from a guy who collaborated with Linton Kwesi Johnson on his previous studio set). And the cover of "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" proves David Sanborn is no substitute for Junior Walker. The final two songs, "El Salvador" and "American Backslide," recall the edgier themes of Jeffreys' best work, but their place in the running order suggests the artist knew he was propping up a house of cards. There's too much that's good on Guts for Love to utterly dismiss it -- Jeffreys remains a superb and wildly underrated singer, and he's in fine voice here -- but that doesn't change the fact it's a weak and disappointing effort from someone capable of far more. ~ Mark Deming

The Housman's Athletes debut album is an eclectic cocktail of various forms of rock music with a hardcore edge that possesses a musical flow and is universal in appeal. The 5-piece group out of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Housman's Athletes (Eric Epps, Chris Foley, DJ Foley, Mike Kazmer, and Logan Kavanaugh), utilized their life experiences as a catalyst for a thought-provoking thematic record with a dash of dance and punk music. "Thematically, the record really demonstrates the beauty of life," Housman's guitarist and primary vocalist Eric Epps explains. "In life, you have to take the good with the bad. There are depressing parts and good parts. You have to learn to deal with a multitude of different things." Under the tutelage of producer and owner of Crush Recordings, Ryan Greene (NOFX, Lagwagon, No use for a Name, Good Riddance, Authority Zero, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), the band was able to achieve the sound that they have been striving for. "We have grown so much in our sound since we first started playing together," Guitarist DJ Foley said. "Ryan helped us get to a whole new level and we were able to make a kick-ass record. He definitely helped us out big on the drumming and the production, and now the record just sounds huge." Since the band's first record together as Army Of Strippers, they said they felt like they have grown substantially in their musical expression by working toward a sound that is completely different. The result of the band's artistic maturity has been laughingly described as a procreation of the two video game hits Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero. "Our sound is as if those two video games made a hot baby," band member Eric Epps said. "It's definitely a whole different entity than the first songs we wrote together. I think our latest project really reflects our maturity. We stopped trying to play as fast as possible and started writing the music we, and others, want to hear."Eric also said he felt the meticulous attention to detail was necessary in catapulting the record to the level they wanted. "With the recording, we spent so much time trying to find the tone that matches the sort of vibes of the song. We used a different sounds for each song - different drumsets, basses, and guitar amps when necessary -- and we were able to shape each song with a unique feel. That is something that we never had the luxury of doing before."
