The 1990s and early 2000s saw a bevy of "de Durango" bands emerge on the scene, and Los Primos de Durango--with their bubbling ranchera sound and smart cowboy hats--fit into that scene nicely. VOY A CONVENCERTE (2007) contains many of the hallmarks of the genre: strummed guitars, lively tempos, and the occasional plaintive ballad, all presented with tight musicianship and spot-on, heart-tugging harmonies. Durangese, a regional Mexican style, is an increasingly competitive game, but songs like "Y Tu Te Vas" and "Carinito" show Los Primos de Durango have a good chance of going the distance.

Best known as Nick Cave's secret weapon in both the Birthday Party and the Bad Seeds, Mick Harvey has enjoyed an idiosyncratic and respectable solo career. Harvey has scored several films, an outlet particularly well suited to his moody, noir-ish musical sensibility and his skills as a multi-instrumentalist. MOTION PICTURE MUSIC '94-'05 acts as a sampler of Harvey's film work, comprising 27 cues. While longer selections from the film scores might have been more satisfying, it is hard to argue with the music here, which is inventive, layered, and quite beautiful.
