While initially a side project to Spencer Krug's primary band, Wolf Parade, this Montreal quartet over the course of a few albums has grown formidable in its own right. RANDOM SPIRIT LOVER--the band's Jagjaguwar debut--toys with similar sonic territory as previous efforts with plucky baroque touches intermingling with the rock instrumentation, but a newfound group energy has overtaken the outfit, and the results are thrilling. At times sounding like Arcade Fire with even more of a Bowie fixation, RANDOM SPIRIT LOVER captures the excitement of a band finding the thrumming rock core in a hummable tune and a harpsichord, much like the Arcade Fire's FUNERAL did with a string section.
Sunset Rubdown: Jordan Robson Cramer, Michael Doerksen, Camilla Wynne Ingr, Spencer Krug.
Recording information: Breakglass Studios, Montreal, Quebec, Canada (01/2007).
Spin (p.125) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] creepy, absorbing third album...piling on layers of tinkly sounds to create a carnivalesque aura." Random Spirit Lover album
$12.69 It shouldn't be a surprise that an artist as stridently unconventional as Joanna Newsom would make a second album that overturns all the expectations established by her first. While Newsom's harp, highly poetic lyrics, and distinctive, child-like voice will be familiar to fans of THE MILK-EYED MENDER, YS takes Newsom's art in a new, startling directions.
The quaint, self-contained folk portraits of the debut are obliterated here in favor of sprawling epics that recall sea shanties, Homeric myths, and progressive rock. Newsom's words are still highly literate and evocative, ...
| | Menomena Friend And Foe CD (2007)
Random Spirit Lover CD music
$10.29 Though Menomena often peg themselves as an experimental band, and to some extent very much are an experimental band -- they create most of their songs using a homemade computer program that loops their instrumental riffs until they come up with something whole -- especially in the rhythm section, where the bass and drums play off one another intricately, blending punk- and funk-inspired beats with more straightforward rock emphases, they also have a delicate sense of melody and composition that balances these heavier underpinnings and makes the band rather poppy at times. It's a nice contrast, the lighter keyboards and almost nasally indie rock vocals (which all three members share) against the pounding drums and ominous saxophone. Musically, there's a lot happening on Friend and Foe, their first release with Barsuk -- different bits entering and exiting -- but it's not overwhelming ...
| | Battles Mirrored CD (2007)
Random Spirit Lover music CDs
$12.25 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.

| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Random Spirit Lover songs
$10.19 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo ...
| | Animal Collective Strawberry Jam CD (2007)

$13.35 While the band was never really folk, STRAWBERRY JAM finds them severing themselves entirely from any freak-folk allegiances, as almost all the more acoustic elements of earlier records have ...

| | Tommy Beavitt Holding Water CD (2003)
Random Spirit Lover album
$11.49 Tommy Beavitt is a singer-songwriter based in the Highlands of Scotland. He has been recording and performing original material since 1989, touring throughout Europe and also in America and Australia. His songs are humorous and quirky but unafraid to venture into the darker realms of human experience. A key influence on his sparse, fluid guitar style and expressive vocal style has been Michael Hurley, doyen of the currently voguish Americana genre. Tommy has performed and recorded with some of Scotland's finest musicians including Toby Shippey (Salsa Celtica), Conrad Ivitsky (Shooglenifty), McFall's Chamber Orchestra, John Rae, Stevie Christie (Proclaimers) and David "Demus" Donnelly. The recent Holding Water was released on Boatshed Records and co-produced by Toby Shippey and James Locke (Chimes)DiscographyBreaking Wind (1989)In the Night Kitchen (1992)Eschatology (1994)Decalogue (1999)Holding Water (2003) Reviews"The lyrics are like a poem and Tommy sang his heart out of his mouth...very emotional and wunderful, just with his acoustic-guitar. A song for lonely nights and rainy days. Great!" Strehl Music, Germany"My two absolutely favourite song writers are Paul Brady and Jackson Browne. The Celtic fringe feel of Tommy's work is beautifully in the same tradition as Mr Brady's. And he is definitely influenced by Jackson Browne, even down to his favourite chord sequences in middle eights. You can analyse this as the "bring it on home" return of Irish traditional music to its roots, after being processed in the New World. But whilst that is all very interesting, it's really about Brady listening to Jackson's (and the Eagles) records. Tommy's stuff reminds me of Brady, and ...

| | Paul Renna Portrait CD (2008)
Random Spirit Lover music CDs
$16.45 Paul Renna has been working in the music industry for the last 17 years. His soulful sound is a reflection of the passion he feels in his music. His professional career begin in Dallas at the age of 17. Paul was a regular performer in the Deep Ellum scene. Fronting bands Unknown Figures, he and his band gained popularity opening for band's Tripping Daisies and Jackopierce. Upon graduation from Highland Park high school, Paul went solo for a year continuing to work the venues in and around Dallas. His opportunity to move to Austin came in 1992. Austin, being the nomadic environment and music capital of the Southwest, enticed a new beginning into Paul's career. Fronting bands, Rhythm Child, his band gained the reputation as one of Austin's hottest live bands, opening for bands Ugly Americans, Little Sister, and Soulhat. After one live album, and opening for Blues Traveler in Alaska, the band parted ways and Paul formed a new band Jumptrain, who also toured Alaska. Another album and the band parted ways to begin new career paths. Paul's ...
