(3 Customer Reviews)
On 2007's CEASE TO BEGIN, its second album for the venerable Sub Pop label, Band of Horses expands on the dreamy indie-rock sound of its well-received debut, EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. The product of considerable changes for the group--namely the departure of founding guitarist Mat Brooke and relocation from Seattle, Washington to Charleston, South Carolina--BEGIN solidifies singer/guitarist Ben Bridwell's status as the central creative force behind the ensemble. Even though it does nothing to allay frequent comparisons to My Morning Jacket, the record does further Bridwell's impressive songcraft, which shines on the chiming, widescreen expanse of "Is There a Ghost" and the jangly acoustic vibe of "Lamb on the Lam (In the City)."

Rolling Stone (p.116) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007" -- "This music is simultaneously downcast and sky-cresting..." Spin (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Every sound lingers, and each stretched-out moment is welcome." Uncut (p.84) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he 10 songs here rely on slightly reedy and meandering country-rock. It's a sound that devotees of Crazy Horse or My Morning Jacket will find conspicuously pleasing..." Magnet (p.91) - "Bridwell and Co. nail the soft/loud dynamic better than any group in recent memory, and CEASE TO BEGIN is a fine, fitting return to familiar ground." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "For those with more eclectic tastes, CEASE TO BEGIN is an enthralling album..." Q (Magazine) (p.12) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "From the anthem-like 'Ode To LRC' to the sanguine finale of 'Window Blues,' this is beautifully paced and utterly beguiling." Band Of Horses Cease To Begin Songs Cease To Begin Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Not Half Bad I got a free iTunes download of No One's Gonna Love You from Starbucks. I figured what do I have to lose? It's free, right? All I have to say is thank you Starbucks! I now have the CD and really like almost all the tracks. Band Of Horses music reminds me of a chill 1970's day, know what I mean? No, the music isn't original. And no, the band isn't original. To me they are 70's reincarnated pop/folk/rock junkies. Not new to me but can be new to a whole different generation. Strong tracks are "Cigarettes, Wedding Bells", "Ode To LRC", "Detlef Schremph", "Marry Song" and "No One's Gonna Love You". Damn, do any of you out there remember when weed used to be called reefer??? This is the music that brings back those days! Submitted by RainbowRyder (Chicago) Was This Review Helpful? Mellow Out... To be honest, I bought this album because they played on Letterman. I'd never heard of them before, but the song "Is There a Ghost" just stuck in my head and begged me to give them a try. I like it tho, it's good chill music and easy to sing along to. Check it out! Cease To Begin
$11.65 EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME is the debut release on Sub Pop from Seattle's Band of Horses. | | National Boxer CD (2007)
Cease To Begin
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.
And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero Sufjan Stevens contributes ...
| | Radiohead In Rainbows CD
Cease To Begin
$10.69 Initially issued in October 2007 with little prior notice, Radiohead's seventh full-length studio outing, IN RAINBOWS, took not only fans but the entire music industry by surprise. Released for a limited time only as an online download, the album was offered by the revered British rock group in a groundbreaking "pay what you want" format, allowing the listener to decide its digital value before an appearance in conventional CD form a few months later.
Innovative business practices aside, IN RAINBOWS also garnered attention as Radiohead's most immediately engaging offering since its BENDS/OK COMPUTER days, returning to slightly more accessible pop/rock ...

| | Sadies New Seasons CD (2007) Digipak
Cease To Begin
$13.69 Country rockers the Sadies display such mastery with rootsy Americana that it's hard to believe they're from Canada. Be that as it may, they continue to impress, and 2007's NEW SEASONS is one of the stand-out gems in their already glowing catalogue.
The lovely harmonies of brothers Dallas and Travis Good are matched only by their guitar playing, which balances technical facility and eclecticism with economy and grace. There are shades of folk rock, bluegrass, and psychedelia here, but the Sadies bring it all together beautifully, thanks ...
