If Tom Waits never became a star, he might have been Chuck E. Weiss, a longtime Waits pal who has a similarly quirky sound mixing blues, rock, and left-field weirdness. Weiss was immortalized in popular culture by Rickie Lee Jones's hit "Chuck E.'s in Love," but his own music is considerably less pop-friendly. THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN is his 1981 debut album, and it possesses all the elements that would flower on his latter-day recordings, albeit in nascent form: his raw vocal style, bluesy gambol, and tendency toward street-life/shaggy-dog tales.
Personnel: Chuck E. Weiss (vocals, percussion); Rickie Lee Jones (vocals); Alvin Robinson (guitar); Mac 'Doctor John' Rebennack (keyboards); Larry Taylor (bass guitar); Freddy Stahle (drums).

$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental ...

$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

$13.15 Metal Shock Magazine (Italy) TREASON "Spinning" (Produced by Ted Stockwell & Ron St. Germain) 12 tracks Ratings: Production 5.0 Technical 4. 5 Conviction 4. 5 Personality 5. 0 5 Stars Overall I have been anxiously awaiting the second CD of the American Band Treason. You might remember the flattering review I wrote on the first album a couple of years ago. And now the band, led by keyboard player Ted Stockwell, is appearing on the scene with their new CD entitled Spinning. With the first CD, we saw a band with infinite capability to write and execute excellent compositions. With the new CD, it is confirmed. Spinning highlights even more of the superb abilities of these five musicians from Seattle. The music on this CD is even more incredible than in the past. Omnipresent and majestical keyboards, sharp and rockin' guitars, and a powerful rhythm section, precise as a Swiss watch, are the basic ingredients of the Treason sound. To these elements are added vibrant and powerful vocals. Which brings me to this point - much of the success of this CD is due to the joining of the new and extraordinary vocalist Jason Saunders. With his rich tone, power and range - his voice is incredible. It is warm and gritty and, in my opinion, is the rock voice of the new millennium. The twelve songs on this CD are a delicacy for the ears. The mix and sound have been well attended to. The production is equal to that of any major, which adds to the success of this work. To appreciate this CD, it would be enough just to hear the second track, "Last Stand." After a rich and powerful intro, it explodes into a breathtaking refrain that will get stuck in your head. The magnificent "Cycles," which reminds us of Queensryche from the Empire era, with a mysterious atmosphere, would be fitting for radio airplay. The musical lines in "State of Grace" will carry you away with a simple and effective chorus, which makes you realize the great value of this album. As with their last album, Treason has hosted many well-known musicians. This album is no exception with the dreamy ...

| | Bill Wence California Callin' CD (2001)
Other Side Of Town album
$13.69 A credible songwriter in his own right, Bill Wence offers up a healthy amount of traditional no-frills country music. The longtime keyboardist for Tom T. Hall has a style that calls to mind John Hiatt during "You're the Best." The title track is a bit more up-tempo and doesn't quite work as well, but when Wence chooses softer ballads with strong narratives, such as on "I'll Send My Love," as well as "I Wanna Do It Again," he strikes a chord that is timeless and true. The mandolin also works well on the track. It seems the shorter the song's length, the better it comes across to the listener. "Lady Lovin' Night" and the bouncy "Quicksand" are good examples of being short yet sweet. Accompanied by an array of backing and lead vocalists who duet on several tracks, Wence sounds a bit too polished on "I'm Still Lovin' You," a track that sounds a bit too busy with too much happening. Another asset to this album is that while it's traditional in its tone, the mood tends to be always upbeat and to possess a certain California vibe deep within each track. "Hold On" has the lap steel guitar, but with an almost Hawaiian or summer rhythm. Perhaps the best song is "Break Away," a strong duet with Jonell Mosser that has a soft and subtle arrangement. But "This Is a Hold Up" deserves an honorable mention as well for its laid-back feeling and quality lyrics. While it may have been a long time in the works, this album is well worth the wait. ~ Jason MacNeil
Country Standard Time November 21-2001Tom NetherlandSuperstars with household names are not alone among fine country musicians. Indeed, much of today's better country comes from those whose name won't even strike chords in Music City. One such talent is Bill Wence. His self-released album probably won't have radio station conglomerates calling him, but he's pulled off what a number of today's platinum-selling artists don't do: an understated album brimming with sweet quality. And heart. Each of the 11 tunes were either written or co-written by Wence, including the superb title track. Now, he doesn'texactly conjure images of a hardcore country singer, such as with a bluesy "I'm Still Lovin' You". Furthermore, Wence warbles with heart, as on "I'll Send My Love," yet his smoky voice won't make anyone forget Marty Robbins either. But therein lies the charm. He sings ...
