Six Organs of Admittance have always been at the forefront of the psych-folk revival in the '00s by virtue of Ben Chasny's incredibly accomplished guitar playing. While most acts in the movement were content with leaning on a chanted vocal or open chord, Chasny put a muscular edge into his drones with dizzyingly complex tablature. SHELTER FROM THE ASH continues this remarkable string of records with a song cycle built on the interlocking of intense acoustic- and explosive electric-guitar melodies. The record alternates between Chasny's essentially solo acoustic compositions, such as the beautifully menacing "Jade Like Wine," and full-throttle, full-band workouts such as the title track, a mesmerizing twin guitar blast that'll bore new chakras into listeners' skulls.Rolling Stone (p.70) - "There is an abundance of cleansing guitar fire, especially in the hovering howl of 'Final Wing'..." Spin (p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] transcendent drones and trippy, Eastern-inspired guitar figures..." Uncut (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Chasny flexes his muscle on scorching electric guitar solos on 'Strangled Road' and centrepiece 'Coming To Get You'." Alternative Press (p.131) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[Chasny] proves his haunting acoustic melodies are just getting better with age. His ethereal duet with the Magik Marker's Elisa Ambrogio on 'Strangled Road' is gorgeous..." The Wire (p.52) - "Chasny's songcraft now more than matches his guitar smarts; he writes here in a strange kind of personal cabbala, odd, gnarly little scenarios of loss and redemption..." Q (Magazine) (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he unearthly dawn chorus of 'Jade Like Wine' or the ritual freakout of 'Goddess Atonement' leave you yearning for a solstice to celebrate." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] impressive cocktail of Eastern-inflected drones, mantra-like vocals and thick slabs of empyrean noise guitar." Harp (magazine) (p.106) - "ASH plays like a consciously constructed sequel to SUN....The songs are towering and cavernously arranged..." Shelter From The Ash album
$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Shelter From The Ash CD music
$17.75 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known ...

| | Gold Stars 1992-2002: The Juliana Hatfield Collection CD (2002)
Shelter From The Ash music CDs
$27.95 Recorded between 1992 and 2002. Includes liner notes by Juliana Hatfield.
The problem with the compilation Gold Stars 1992-2002 is that it doesn't provide a full overview of the era advertised in the title. Yes, there are some selections from Hey Babe and her two Atlantic albums here, but the majority of this album is drawn from the time after she had her run as a Next Big Thing and media darling -- which means there is a lot from Bed and the simultaneously released Total System Failure and Beautiful Creature, plus a staggering seven previously unreleased songs. All this means is that while Gold Stars is indeed a "Juliana Hatfield Collection," it's hardly a best-of. There are too many omissions to mention -- nothing from her early EPs, none of the good B-sides, no "Nirvana," no "Forever Baby," no "I See You," none of the material that made Hey Babe such a charming debut, few of the songs that made her Atlantic album alt-rock hits. What's left is a bunch of songs from the late '90s -- some of it appealing and well-crafted, yet it's hard not to be disappointed that the collection is so heavily skewed toward an era where she was making good music for a cult instead of the time when she was actually in the spotlight. Gold Stars does have some of her best stuff, and it has her ...
